Guest guest
Natural Environment Training Saturday, May 8, 2010, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. (lunch on your own) Workshop with Dr. Carl Sundberg Location: The Children's Medical Center of Dayton One Children's Plaza, Dayton, OH 45404, Auditorium (Lower Level) Teaching in the natural environment is a critical skill to acquire. Unfortunately parents, therapist and teachers often struggle with this aspect of an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program. Many mistakenly think ABA takes place only at a table with a wide array of drills. While it is true that trials in the natural environment may not be as intense or frequent, the quality is typically better and more realistic. Natural environment teaching (NET) by itself may not be sufficient when an ABA program requires formal trials and structure. However NET and table work both are typically needed and complement each other. In this workshop participants will learn how to create teaching situations while doing everyday activities such as bath, dinner, and bedtime routines, or playing in the backyard, etc. Strategies for working with children in a mainstream classroom setting will also be discussed. This workshop will cover... .. The importance of including both natural environment training (NET) and discrete trial training (DTT) into a child's program .. How to capture situations to create language opportunities .. How to contrive or engineer situations to create language opportunities .. How to teach Mands in the natural environment .. What to do with a skill once it is taught (Where are we going with this?) .. How to teach your child to generalize skills learned in a more structured setting (i.e., DTT) .. How to teach skills that are functional for the student .. How to write teaching objectives for NET activities .. Strategies for working with your child in the mainstream classroom .. Teaching strategies that will maximize your child's success in the classroom This seminar is free for DAFEAT members. Cost for non-members is $36 and includes a year-long DAFEAT membership.
