Utilizing scientifically validated treatment procedures, Eden II/Genesis

Programs has been a leader in the effective intervention and education of

individuals with autism over the past 30 years. In an effort to disseminate

sound

information about autism spectrum disorders and provide training and support,

Eden II/Genesis Programs will offer the following workshops.

EARLY CHILDHOOD WORKSHOPS

..3 ASHA CEUs will be offered for workshops 1 & 4

These early childhood workshops are designed to assist in the development of

effective treatment programs for young children affected by autism spectrum

disorders and are targeted to professionals and parents seeking information

for children in the early intervention through preschool age range.

1. DEVELOPMENTAL ASSESSMENT OF YOUNG CHILDREN (DAYC)

Falleo, MS Ed, SAS, SDA

This workshop is designed for those who will use the Developmental

Assessment of Young Children (DAYC) as part of early intervention. The DAYC is

used

to identify children birth through 5 years and 11 months of age with possible

delays in the domains of cognition, communication, social-emotional

development, physical development and adaptive behavior. The five subtests

relate to

the areas of development that are evaluated for early intervention

eligibility and children’s developmental performance in accordance with the

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

2. MANAGING CHALLENGING BEHAVIOR IN YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Hester Bekisz

The focus of this workshop is to provide an overview of challenging behaviors

andhighlight assessment considerations when addressing the challenging

behaviors

of young individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Assessment tools will

be reviewed to assess the functions of behavior. Proactive interventions,

tools and strategies will be discussed with respect to the development of

individually-tailored, behavioral interventions. Examples will be provided to

demonstrate the efficacy of these techniques.

3. THE ABCS OF ABA FOR YOUNG CHILDREN WITH ASD

Mc, PhD, BCBA

This workshop will provide an overview of a variety of specific strategies

based in the principles of applied behavior analysis. The workshop will

cover topics such as conducting a student preference assessment, the use of

effective and appropriate reinforcement systems, selecting and fading prompts to

promote independent learning, data collection and the importance of

discrimination training in early learning for students with ASD.

4. PLAY AND LANGUAGE IN YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER:

DEVELOPING PRELIMINARY SOCIAL SKILLS

Dana Battaglia, M.Phil CCC-SLP

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are diagnosed as having

impairments in three areas: social/pragmatic interaction, language/

communication, and behavioral/sensory interests. During this workshop, the

correlation

between social and language milestones from birth through age 5 will be shown.

Research in the areas of behavior, pragmatic skills, language and joint

attention will be reviewed. Finally, strategies to facilitate such skills in

children with ASD will be discussed.

SPRING AUTISM WORKSHOPS

..4 ASHA CEUs will be offered for workshops 4 & 5

These workshops are designed to offer training in the understanding and

implementation of applied behavior analysis (ABA) procedures for individuals

across the autism spectrum. These workshops are open to professionals and

parents

and workshop content is suitable for intervention with individuals of all

ages and functioning levels across the autism spectrum. Each workshop will be 5

hours long with a 1 hour break for lunch. Lunch will be on your own.

1. TRANSITION PLANNING IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOL

Joanne Capuano Sgambati, PhD

More now than ever, districts are working diligently to keep special

education students in district schools while supporting their transitional

needs.

Parents are also advocating for more transitional support for their children.

This workshop will cover compliance issues with regulations regarding

transition planning, a time line for transitional steps, person centered

planning,

and areas to cover on the IEP. This talk will also cover performing vocational

assessments; creating measurable objective and functional goals, and

practical ways to build vocational goals into the school curriculum.

2. HOW TO EFFECTIVELY TRAIN YOUR CLASSROOM STAFF TO WORK WITH STUDENTS

WITH AUTISM

Irene Stefas, MA

This workshop will give specific strategies on how to train your classroom

staff to work with students with autism. The key areas such as: effective

prompting procedures, reinforcement systems, curriculum modifications and

teaching strategies that classroom staff should be aware of will be covered.

Data

sheets will be handed out and discussed as a useful tool in monitoring your

classroom staff's performance. The role of the teacher, teacher assistant as

well as the role of the 1:1 aide will be discussed. The role of the consultant

will be outlined as well.

3. BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT FOR YOUR CLASSROOM

Joanne Capuano Sgambati, PhD

Research demonstrates that when problematic behaviors occur in the

classroom, opportunities for learning decrease. The focus of this workshop is

on the

effective implementation of applied behavior analysis strategies based on the

functional assessment of challenging behaviors in students with autistic

spectrum disorders. Why behaviors may occur in a classroom environment and

multiple proactive and reactive strategies for behavior management will be

discussed. Class wide behavior strategies as well as individualized behavior

plans will also be reviewed.

4. MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS OF BOARDMAKER WITH INDIVIDUALS OR STUDENTS WITH

AUTISM

Dana Battaglia, M.Phil CCC-SLP

Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been shown to benefit

from visual strategies. During this workshop, current literature will be

discussed, in terms of how use of visual strategies are beneficial for children

with autism. The use of Boardmaker software will be discussed, in terms of

how its potential application beyond the generation of Picture Exchange icons.

Demonstrations will be provided.

5. USING COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE SOCIAL SKILLS IN

INDIVIDUALS WITH HFA AND ASPERGER SYNDROME

Mc, PhD, BCBA

This workshop will discuss a variety of strategies that have been successful

for improving social/pragmatic skills (i.e. understanding subtle language

cues, interpersonal space, intonation, gesture, and body language) and reducing

anxiety in individuals with ASD. Specific strategies to be discussed will

include topics such as: the use of behavioral rehearsal, social stories,

cognitive picture rehearsal, role playing, video modeling and video rehearsal.

WORKSHOP FACULTY

Dana Battaglia, M. Phil. CCC-SLP

Ms. Battaglia received her Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology

from C.W. Post/Long Island University, and her Master’s degree in

Speech-Language Pathology from St. ’s University in Queens, New York.

She is a

licensed Speech Language Pathologist and Teacher of the Speech and Hearing

Handicapped in New York State. She holds the Certificate of Clinical

Competence

from the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Ms.

Battaglia

has conducted presentations on autism and speech-language related topics at

the local, state and national levels. Dana has worked in a variety of

settings, including private and public schools, private practice, and Early

Intervention. Currently, she is working as a Clinical Coordinator of Outreach

Services at the Eden II/Genesis Program, while pursuing her Doctoral studies at

the

City University of New York in the Speech and Hearing Sciences.

Hester Bekisz

Ms. Bekisz is currently the Clinical Coordinator for The Genesis School.

She oversees the implementation and development of behavior intervention plans.

She also reviews and conducts clinics on IEP goals. Hester began her

career at The Genesis School in 2002 as a Behavior Specialist; she began her

current role in 2007. She is is working toward her Masters in Special

Education

through the College of New Rochelle. Ms. Bekisz has presented at regional and

national conferences.

Falleo, MS Ed, SAS, SDA

Ms. Falleo is currently the Program Manager of NYC for n K. Salomon &

Associates, Inc., Early Intervention Program. She has over 17 years of

experience serving individuals with Autism and was the recipient of the 2005

New

York State Association for Behavior Analysis (NYSABA) Award for Dedication to

ABA within New York State. Ms. Falleo serves as the Chairperson for the

Suffolk County DOH LEICC Sub-Committee on Training and Supervision for ABA

Services, which has been instrumental in setting standards for provider

competency.

For the past seven years, she had served as the ABA Director for

Personal-Touch Early Intervention Program and is currently an adjunct Professor

for CW

Post Long Island Campus Graduate BCBA Certification Program. She is a NYS

Certified Special Educator with a Masters degree in Severe Disabilities from

Queens College. She holds a Professional Development Certification in Staff

Development; School Administration and Supervision (SAS), and School District

Administration (SDA) from The College of New Rochelle. Ms. Falleo has

completed her BCBA Certification coursework via University of North Texas.

Mc, PhD, BCBA

Dr. Mc is the Director of Outreach and Consultation Services for the

Eden II/Genesis Programs. The Department provides training and consultation

services to various programs and school districts. Dr. Mc completed

her Ph.D. in Learning Theory at the CUNY Graduate Center and is a Board

Certified Behavior Analyst. She has over 17 years experience directing

programs

for students with autism spectrum disorders utilizing the principles of

Applied Behavior Analysis and has also worked in early intervention programs

providing supervision, training and consultation for almost 10 years. She is

currently an Assistant Professor in the Special Education Department at Hofstra

University. Dr. Mc presents at local and national conferences on topics

related to autism and applied behavior analysis.

Joanne Capuano Sgambati, Ph.D.

Dr. Sgambati is currently a School Psychologist at The Genesis School for

children with autism in Long Island. She is a New York State Licensed

Psychologist and a Board Certified School Psychologist. She works as an Autism

Consultant for various school districts through the Outreach Department at

Genesis. She has over 20 years of experience working with special education

students. She received her Clinical/School Doctorate at Hofstra University and

her

Masters of Education at Indiana State University. She volunteers and presents

at various conferences, training workshops, local school districts, and

SEPTA’

s.

Irene Stefas, MA

Ms. Stefas has a Masters in Psychology from Adelphi University. She has

been working with children with autism for 9 years. Ms. Stefas has been working

as an autism consultant at the Genesis School for 4 years. Prior to her work

as a consultant, Irene worked at the Genesis School as a classroom teacher

for 2 years.

A certificate of attendance will be given to all registrants.
