An Introduction to Mand (request) Training with Sign Language Saturday, March 20, 2010, 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Workshop with Dr. Amber Valentino Location: The Children's Medical Center of Dayton One Children's Plaza, Dayton, OH 45404, Auditorium (Lower Level) This workshop will focus on: . The use of behavior analytic principles to teach early language skills . How to teach early requests to learners who have yet to develop vocal speech . How to make early language training exciting and fun . Setting up the language training environment . How to make the transition from requesting with an augmentative communication system to vocal language After this workshop participants will. · have knowledge of alternative strategies to teach vocal imitation · have a better understanding of motivation and its role in teaching early requesting skills · be able to determine how to begin teaching early requests based on the learner's skill set · learn basic data collection strategies to aid in decision making · learn to use prompts and prompt fading to teach independent requesting · acquire problem solving skills for common obstacles that occur during beginning language training This seminar is free for DAFEAT members. Amber Valentino, Psy.D., BCBA-D earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from Xavier University in 2008. She is a licensed psychologist and board certified behavior analyst - doctoral. Dr. Valentino specializes in the assessment and treatment of language deficits particularly in children with autism. She currently works for a nonprofit organization in Atlanta, GA where she is responsible for case management, staff training, supervision of undergraduate and graduate trainees, and parent training/consultation.
