Guest guest
LOl, ! I know I want a Vitamix but no point in rushing that, so I'm with Melody on the 'easy does it' road, LOL!! Anyhoo, I'm really glad the Aerogarden was a good buy. I'm eager to communicate with you about the less expensive way of growing stuff in it without buying all the doodads they offer. But since I already have the cherry tomato seeds, etc., I'll start with that. But I need to carve out some time to look at it more and then formulate my questions for you. In the meantime, I'll see about keeping my eyes open for another Aerogarden or even a Vitamix on Craigslist. You never know!! T. Guest guest
Oh, I want to comment about little cherry tomatoes. Around my area they were on sale 3 pints for a buck. You can't beat that right? I brought them home, washed them, put them in my Oso Fresh and while they kept just fine, they weren't tasty. Nothing like a good beefsteak tomatoes would taste. So for the next few weeks, I'm going to ignore all the 3 for a buck on cherry tomatoes and get the other juicy kind. Organic if I can afford it. Guest guest
They taste bland since they were force grown-no time to develop flavor. Guest guest
 I have a 7 plant one. I was thinking tomato, pepper, Tom Thumb lettuce, basil. Not sure of the rest. What do you think? Does Spinach take too much space? Or is it better to only plant 4 instead of the 7? Is it too small for 2 tomatoes and some other things too? Guest guest
You will get it. Or you can make it. Actually, you can probably make something like that yourself, too. You can hook up a plant light above a planter and even better if there is a recess below for water. A small grow box with a light would give you a lot of space, I think. Good luck to you Melody. Guest guest
I watched a commercial for a Ninja the other day and it seems to do what the Vitamix does and it will do ice so fine that it is like shaved ice and Vitamix won't do it that fine and it has to have liquid even to do the ice to shred it up and it isn't as fine as the shaved ice. I haven't used the Ninja but the commercial looks good. It is less expensive that the Vitamix or the Blendtec.   I don't know if it is as good a quality and if it stands up like the Vitamix or not. Might find Vitamix used and save money that way or not. Again, good luck. Guest guest
The Ninja is a perfectly decent machine...but it is no Vitamix. The Vitamix will actually heat soup to scalding hot, make ice cream or butter, grind flour, pulverize even the toughest stuff to velvety smoothness, and many other things. If grinding your own beans, nuts, seeds, grains, etc. into fine flour is important, a Ninja won't cut it, but if all you want is a decent smoothie or crushed ice, the Ninja is a decent option. BUT, the Ninja only has a one year warranty, and the Vitamix has a 7 year full warranty-if anything goes wrong during that 7 years, they will make it right, either with a brand new machine, or fixing the one you have. When you figure a Ninja (or other brand blenders) will likely not last past the year warranty, the Vitamix is worth the money-it works out to 17 cents a day if broken down over the 7 years. > > > > > > That is awesome that you got if for less-GREAT BUY! Guest guest
You could do micro tomatoes or grape tomatoes, two plants per garden, with a couple of miniature pepper plants too (pimento is good) For tom thumb lettuce, you need to make some modifications-you wouldn't use the pods, since tom thumb grows as a head lettuce, no a leaf lettuce. I recommend starting with some basics, then work your way up as you get acquanted with it-leaf lettuce does GREAT, baby spinach, micro toms and other small type veggies do well. Herbs also do great, as does leaf type chinese cabbage. > > > > And I agree with Patti on both counts!! And is an inspiration as well. Guest guest
Such a shame. When they are so pretty they should be tasty too. I have had some that are sweet and yet some are not. In a store, I like to taste one first to see. The grape ones are sweeter. My little grape outside is sweet but the skin is tough as we don't water enough. Beefsetak are good. But not as nice for a salad. What is Oso Fresh? Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2012 10:33 PM Subject: Re: Videos and Inspiration - Melody and  Oh, I want to comment about little cherry tomatoes. Guest guest
I figured it was not as strong as the Vitamix. However, theone I saw had two blades and one blade was for grinding and it sounded like it would make flour. Maybe it is a new one or a new blade which was changeable. I saw that the new Vitamix has 2 containers, one the regular and another smaller one. That would be convenient. I think it was the Vitamix. I got mine years ago and I had wanted one for a number of years and we saw one in WDC when visiting. My daughter was with us and she had wanted one too and they were on demonstration at the Base (military) and we thought the price was wonderful so we got them. Had the dry mix as well and I kept it in the box and didn't use it and then it got mixed up in a shed and I sold all the contents of the sheds so I wouldn't have to pay the rental anymore. My daughter uses hers. She, too said I could use it but the grain might scratch the sides of the mixer. I don't use it very often. I had my husband bring it in from our backyard shed and need to find a place on the counter. I will likely need some spinach and some fresh fruit for some somoothies. I know the Ninja didn't make any soup other than a cold one. But heating up is no big dea. I have an icecream machine after I made some icecream at a cooking class. Guess I should have learned more about the Vitamix.  Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Thursday, March 22, 2012 12:07 AM Subject: Re: Videos and Inspiration - Melody and  The Ninja is a perfectly decent machine...but it is no Vitamix. Guest guest
The thing to keep in mind with the aerogarden is that it is designed to do LEAF style lettuces, not root veggies or head lettuces, nor does it do well with really bushy plants, as they get too big with too big of a root mass. That is one reason I like dwarf or mini varieties. I have made some serious modifications to my aeros to be able to do head lettuce and such, but I recommend a beginner to start with the things it is intended for, such as herbs, leaf lettuce, micros, etc. You can't do root veggies such as carrots in the aero, as they need the soil to grow down in to. > > , I've never heard of micro tomatoes or the miniature pepper plants. I guess I could look for leaf lettuce and baby spinach. Are the peppers sweet?  I have evergreen long white bunching onion, I guess my California Wonder peppers are too big. Ihave microgreens. " Would they work in this or should I just use them as microgreens in the coir? I have little mama peppers, I havew some nasturtium (alaska mixaA), I may try to put a few of those in my tomato trees.  I have touchon carrot seeds, carnival pepper mix (probably too big too.  I don't know if the aerogarden has any seeds with it yet. I'll open them tomorrow afternoon. I also have the sprout mixes here and maybe a few of the 3 or 4 seed salads will be okay to putin one of the slots. I can figure out a seed of each I guess. Do you put one seed in each slot or do you sprout the seed and then plant it in the plug or whatever it is? > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > >

Guest guest
I don't buy seeds from anywhere but trusted non GMO companies...Burpee is NOT on that list. I trade seeds with my local co op, save my own, or buy from either Baker's Creek, High Mowing Seeds, or Seeds of Change. I haven't had to buy seeds in years, so not sure what companies might have changed hands, but Monstanto has been buying up seed companies left and right...NOT a good thing! I only use heirloom organics. > > > > , I've never heard of micro tomatoes or the miniature pepper plants. > > > > > > Carolyn Wilkerson > > > > > > > > >
