DAFEAT Workshop

(Dayton Area Families for Effective Autism Treatment)

Why ABA?

A review of evidence-based treatments for autism

Saturday, November 20, 2010, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Workshop with Amber Valentino, Psy. D, BCBA-D

Location: The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton

One Children’s Plaza, Dayton, OH 45404, Auditorium (Lower Level)

Purpose / Rationale:

Once a child is diagnosed with autism, inevitably parents and caregivers are

bombarded with various treatment options. Many of these treatment options make

claims to cure autism but are uncorroborated and expensive. Additional media

attention to autism in the past few years has fueled misconceptions about

evidence-based treatments. Parents are often left to make difficult decisions

regarding where and how to allocate limited resources.

In this workshop, Amber Valentino will discuss accurate information on

evidence-based treatments for autism. The national standards project will be

discussed as well as key studies supporting the science of applied behavior

analysis (ABA). Accurate information regarding common myths often associated

with ABA will also be provided.

Amber Valentino will provide opportunities for workshop participants to ask

questions.

This workshop will focus on:

· Accurate information on evidence-based treatments for autism

· Accurate information on common myths often associated with ABA

· The national standards project and key studies supporting the science

of ABA
