Guest guest
Hello Everybody, My 6 year old son with Autism will be attending the Kindergarten next school year and I am hoping he will be included in general ed with support. In our county, we have only 3 hours of Kindergarten. I came across some classroom routine goals that my son has difficulty with. Can we include these in his IEP or are they worked on, as a part of Kindergarten routine. a. Works independently on non academic and academic activities. b. Sits and waits appropriately during transitions. c. Waits for turns to do activities. d. Gets into the line and stays in the line , recognizing the personal space. e. Able to sit quietly and listen to the story attentively without interrupting the class. f. Raises his hand and answer the question Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you Krishna
Guest guest
Hi Krishna, Not sure if these skills are particular to a general ed Kindergarten program but they (a typical public school) wouldn't be up to what evidence-based ABA more definitively demands, and so if you can get an IEP that is more specific to the ABA protocol (to teach what it is you, etc., feel should be taught, based on where your son is at now and is capable of, of getting those steps to learning right, for as much) you'd have more going for *progress* in that respect, where you could get it, would be my sense of it. ABA typically starts by dealing one-on-one (as with an aide or shadow?) with a student (as where needed) and without an IEP in that respect I doubt you'd get that, for starters, as important as that (of the necessary accomodations and resources) usually is. Go for what you can get, of all you can get, of value (where more/ABA is typically better, as with having an IEP) based on what you need of the facts I would recommend for any situation. You might still need to get the facts (by your own efforts, of pushing for them) from a psycho-educational assessment and whatever the school might require for as much, as to your situation. You could ask the school what it would require for as much, to be working on side with the school in that respect, which I would advice you do where you would want your child to be properly (honestly, perhaps) educated in such a school.
