Guest guest
Well, I can tell you about sprouting in the sproutgarden and sprouting as a microgreen (which uses a medium). I am presently doing an experiment with my 3 part salad mix sprouting seeds. Alfalfa, radish and broccoli (and I threw in some extra fenugreek too). I ALWAYS use my round green trays for these sprouts. So I decided to grow some in Coir. Do you know how long it takes to do this? I mean, others might enjoy this but I will probably never grow my brassicas in this medium again. I mean, they grow BUT NOTHING LIKE THE SPROUTGARDENT. Maybe I'm prejudiced but I LOVE the round green trays for the 3 part salad mix, and other sprouts and I shall use the coir in the trays for my sunnies and pea shoots (which don't stop growing), OMG!! lol I'm on my 3rd cutting and they are still growing. I had cut some yesterday earlier and by the nightime they were back up again. I love pea shoots. If only I had listened to EW's tutorial info on sunnies and pea shoots, well I would have been doing this QUITE SOME TIME AGO. But better late than never!!! lol Melody > > Hi everyone. It seems like some of you sprout in a tray - hence the conversation about growing medium. Is there some reason you prefer doing this over the Sprout Garden which doesn't require a medium? > > Also, for anyone who hasn't been able to find the Coir, I was at Ace Hardware recently and they didn't have it in the store, but she looked it up and found they have it in the local warehouse. It would arrive in a few days. > > I even checked with the online website and they don't show it there - they told me it is specific to each area which didn't make a lot of sense to me. At the store, we looked at the ingredient list and it wasn't pure Coir though - there were a few other ingredients listed. Are there different companies who make Coir and does anyone know if there is a specific brand we need to get...if so, what is the name brand you use? (This one did say " organic " though). > > Thanks for your input! > > Carol S. >
Guest guest
Hi Carol S. This is just hearsay, but I've heard to beware of coir from Mexico because is has a lot of salt in it. ew Trying to understand - difference between methods Hi everyone. Guest guest
But it's not in all coir. So far, it has only been found in some cheao stuff coming from Mexico. Get a name or e-mail address from the package you have and contact them. I do not now no ever had to rinse out any salt. ew Re: Trying to understand - difference between methods Re: Salt in Coir, that's why I use part of a pair of pantyhose to dump the wet coir in, squeeze as much out as I can. There goes the salt!!! Guest guest
On that 24 blocks that were advertised, it said " low salt coir " so maybe it does all have some salt in it. Some may have more than others. It is sure something to watch. Carolyn Wilkerson  To: sproutpeople Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2012 12:58 AM Subject: Re: Trying to understand - difference between methods  But it's not in all coir. Guest guest
Hi, I just took a look at one of the bricks of coir that I got from Home Depot. Made by Burpee. and they have some of the wording in spanish. I would gather that this was produced in Mexico but it does not indicate this in the packaging. So I'll just do the pantyhose thing and hope for the best.
