EDEN II/GENESIS PROGRAMS AUTISM WORKSHOPS

Utilizing scientifically validated treatment procedures, Eden II Programs

has been a leader in the effective intervention and education of

individuals with autism over the past 30 years. In an effort to disseminate

sound information about autism spectrum disorders (ASD), applied behavior

analysis (ABA), and provide training and support, Eden II/Genesis Programs

will offer the following workshops.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

2. DEVELOPING A COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUM FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM FROM

BIRTH TO 5

Presenter: Mc, PhD, BCBA-D

It is often challenging to develop curriculum for young children with

autism due to their diverse needs. There are critical foundation skills

that are essential in the development of a comprehensive curriculum and

must be addressed early on in the education process. This presentation

will cover specific curriculum areas to be addressed, as well as a

sequential and individualized approach to curriculum development for young

learners with autism spectrum disorders. Sample curriculum will be

provided and discussed.

This workshop will target information suitable for early intervention

through preschool age ranges.

This workshop will offer 3 BACB CEUs.

3. DEVELOPING AND ENHANCING CONVERSTATION SKILLS IN STUDENTS WITH AUTISM

SPECTRUM DISORDERS

Presenter: Dana Battaglia, M.Phil, CCC-SLP

One core area of deficit for students with autism is the area of

socialization. This workshop will focus on language-based assessment and

the development of interventions to address individual student needs.

Specific strategies to teach beginning conversation skills will be

discussed as well as strategies that can be used to enhance student’s

existing conversation skills. Curriculum samples will be provided and will

assist attendees with future curriculum development.

4. MOVING BEYOND BASIC TEACHING METHODS TO PROMOTE LANGUAGE & LEARNING IN

YOUNG CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Presenter: Dana Battaglia, M.Phil, CCC-SLP

This workshop will provide information on a variety of specific teaching

methods to promote learning in young children with ASD. Specific topics

will include: activity schedules, incidental teaching, scripts and

video-based interventions. Research highlights will be provided for each

intervention providing a sample research article utilizing the teaching

methodology with young learners with ASD.

This workshop will target information suitable for early intervention

through pre-school age ranges.

5. WORKING WITH LEARNERS WITH HIGH FUNCTIONING AUTISM AND ASPERGERS

DISORDER: PROMOTING QUALITY OUTCOMES

Presenter: Joanne Gerenser, Ph.D. CCC-SLP

Despite cognitive and linguistic abilities within normal limits and

beyond, long term outcomes for individuals with High Functioning Autism and

Asperger’s Disorder continue to be poor. Many students struggle with

communication issues throughout school aged years in spite of the ability

for some to eventually graduate and continue on to college. Despite this,

however, many remain socially isolated and have difficulty getting or

keeping a job. This workshop will provide an overview of the social,

language, and learning challenges faced by individuals with HFA and

Asperger’s Disorder. Programs to address social and abstract language

development as well social skills will be addressed. In addition, issues

such as bullying, meltdowns, and other important related areas will be

reviewed.

This workshop will offer .4 ASHA CEUs

6. PROVIDING EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS WITH AUTISM IN THE

PUBLIC SCHOOL SETTING

Presenter: Hamilton, LMSW, BCBA

This workshop will review basic principles of behavior and how to apply

them in their setting with students with autism. Specific strategies to

reduce interfering behavior and improve educational outcomes will be

discussed. In addition, this workshop with focus on improving social skills

and promoting independence among students with autism. Finally, the role

of an autism consultant and how to use the consultant effectively will be

discussed.

This workshop will offer 3 BACB CEUs.

Workshop Faculty

Dana Battaglia, M.Phil, CCC-SLP

Ms. Battaglia received her Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language

Pathology from C.W. Post/Long Island University, and her Master’s degree

in Speech-Language Pathology from St. ’s University in Queens, New

York. She is a licensed Speech Language Pathologist and Teacher of the

Speech and Hearing Handicapped in New York State. She holds the

Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language and

Hearing Association (ASHA) . She has worked in a variety of settings,

including private and public schools, private practice, and Early

Intervention. Currently, she is working as a Clinical Coordinator of

Outreach Services at the Eden II/Genesis Program, while pursuing her

Doctoral studies at the City University of New York in the Speech and

Hearing Sciences.

Joanne Gerenser, PhD, CCC-SLP

Dr. Gerenser is the Executive Director of the Eden II Programs. She

received her Master’s Degree at the Ohio State University and her PhD in

Speech and Hearing Science at the City University of New York Graduate

Center. Dr. Gerenser is a past-president of the New York State

Association for Behavior Analysis and a member of the Scientific Advisory

Council for the Organization for Autism Research. She is the Vice

President of the Board of the Interagency Council for Mental Retardation

and Developmental Disabilities. Dr. Gerenser is an adjunct Associate

Professor at Brooklyn College as well as Penn State University. Dr.

Gerenser serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Applied Behavior

Analysis-Speech Language Pathology.

Mc, PhD, BCBA-D

Dr. Mc is the Director of Outreach and Consultation Services

for the Eden II/Genesis Programs. She completed her Ph.D. in Learning

Theory at the CUNY Graduate Center and is a Board Certified Behavior

Analyst. She has over 17 years experience directing programs for students

with autism spectrum disorders utilizing the principles of Applied Behavior

Analysis and has also worked in early intervention programs providing

supervision, training and consultation for almost 10 years. She is

currently an Assistant Professor in the Special Education Department at

Hofstra University. Dr. Mc presents at local and national

conferences on topics related to autism and applied behavior analysis.

Hamilton, LMSW, BCBA

Ms. Hamilton has a Masters in social work and is a Board Certified

Behavior Analyst. She has worked as an autism consultant in the public

school setting for many years. Prior to her work as a consultant, she

worked in an ABA classroom with children with autism. Ms. Hamilton has

also worked with children in the therapeutic foster care system and as a

private psychotherapist.
