I don't wear AFOs but have a left ankle that swells up now and then

due to repeated trauma. Because of that I have found that " mule "

style shoes or backless heel work best for me. So far the best for

comfort and security with a nice dash of style are Sketchers. Some

one in physical therapy recommended them to me. They have several

styles with a very low side and heel that I can wear that are not

backless.

My dad has serious high arched feet and bad hammertoes. He refuses

surgery but has always had his workboots custom made by Redwing. He

swears by them, they last for years.

Two of my soft pairs of New Balance are Women's # 810 (this is a

walking shoe) and also the # 1122 (this one is actually a running

shoe.) But my best ones are # 854 (for cross training).

And I love my Uggs!
