Guest guest
Dear Jani, I was having hip pain a couple weeks ago and it didn't help to lie down or to be in my recliner. It was in the left hip, the one that I had replaced. It hurt to walk. The only chair I could sit in was the captain's type chair I use in front of my computer and so I spent one night sleeping there. After about a week the pain stopped. The only thing I can figure is that the mycoplasmas are on the move and for reasons I don't understand I get pain in places that haven't hurt for years. My hunch is that these places are weak and susceptible to invasion by organisms.
Guest guest
hi Jani I had a lot of hip pain( still do) but my rheumy discovered that I had OA in my spine (lumbar) and prescribed orthotics. Guest guest
Isn't it amazing what orthotics will do for your comfort. I can't walk in " normal " shoes. Birkenstocks and my New Balance walking shoes are all I can wear also. The walking shoes have a built in arch support. I was shelving all these beautiful new spring shoes at work and wishing I could wear some of them. But I would be a cripple after walking 12 feet. Guest guest
yes , i have really bad hip pain [ i wish the doctor would give me pain killers but he won't . anyway when you sleep at night place a pillow be tween your knees -it takes the pressure off your hips and back. also you might want to ask your doctor for elavil an antideppresant medication. this medication is also used to treat nerve pain and as such you can obtain some pain relief from this [it also keeps you from being depressed . so you really get two benifits from one medication. anyway it helps me cathy from mass. Guest guest
I have terrible hip pain as well. It often wakes me up at night with shooting pains & the only way I can describe it is it feels like a hot curling iron is in there. Oh the joy!!! Guest guest
Hi Judy, That's a BIG YES on hip pain. I'm in misery today. Can't stand or sit for long at the time. Looks like with all the padding back there we wouldn't feel like we were sitting on concrete does'nt it. It's hard to get my housework done today even my back hurts. Gotta move now, stiff and hurting. Cassie
Guest guest
Talking about hip, leg pain. I too have that problem. I can't sit too long, walk very far or stand very long. I also find I can't carry things. I can pick them up but not to go from point a to point b. I had an electric bed thinking I could get relief from the pain by bending the knees but that didn't work either so now I sleep in a reclilner and have been for the last 5-6 years. It may sound funny but hey it works. It takes the pressure off the back and legs and then when I go to get up I just use the lever to lower the legs. My chair reclines way back almost to a laying down positiion so I can change position. The only thing is you can't lay on your side but I couldn't anyway because of the pain. I am also taking vioxx and for now that seems to be holding me. At least I have the flexability of my joints but I have to pace myself. Wishing you a pain free day!!!!!! Guest guest
I'm kind of surprised at how many who've posted about hip pain. Hip pain that keeps you awake at night can be a symptom of a hip that needs replacement -- have any of you had your hip looked at by an orthopod? Replacement isn't a pleasant thought, but the PA could be wearing out your cartilage or something without your knowing. I'm especially aware of things relating to hips, since I was born with congenital hip dysplasia. A cast on my leg(s), when I was 18 months old, left me as good as new -- until I hit my early 40s. Then I discovered, 7 years ago, that my own newly emerging hip pain was because I was losing cartilage and that I'd be needing a THR (total hip replacement) pretty soon. Even knowing I'd had the CHD, hearing I'd need a THR was a total shock -- that was major " news to me. " And my hip pain was kind of weird -- it never kept me awake at night, for instance -- but it did eventually keep me from walking very far and so I used a cane for a couple-three years. Finally got a replacement this past January and feel I've been graced with a new lease on life. Anyway, something to think about (as if anybody needed anything more!)? --Louise
Guest guest
Hi Judy, I hope you are feeling better now. I suggest that you try to have a MRI done for your hips and/or knees, because PA can be the reason for your pain in those areas of your body. If not a MRI, then maybe an x-ray would be helpful in terms of diagnosing exactly what is the source or reason for your pain. Guest guest
Judy - I have pretty bad pain in my left hip - it kind of " catches " when I move sometimes and feels like it will pop out of the socket. My rheumy says it's probably bursitis - but I think it's more likely the PA
Guest guest
Jayne - I have recently started having thigh pain as well - upper thigh, sort of like an electrical shock that doesn't stop. Is yours like that or is it more a bone/joint sort of thing?

Guest guest
Joyce, I have had the bursitis in both hips for a long time, also attributed to the severely degenerated spine. Using a walking aid is useful and I have elbow crutches but still can walk only very short distances without causing some spinal and hip pain . When it is really painful, cortisone shots in the hip can give relief. I also have a topical anti-inflammatory which I rub into the hips to ease pain. Another suggestion is deep tissue massage - it hurts but afterwards, you may experience relief. Guest guest
Hi Sue You might have sacroiliitis. Sacroiliitis is inflammation of the sacroiliac joint, which connects the lower spine and pelvis. I had this before and it was very painful. Rest and anti-inflammatory medication helped. Signs and symptoms include: Pain and stiffness in the lower back or buttocks, especially in the morning and arthritis affecting the hips and shoulders. Just Google sacroiliitis and there are lots of web-sites for more info. Take Care Babs
Guest guest
Hi everybody, I was wondering if any of you with RA have had any experience with hip pain. I have been bothered by pain actually in my rear off and on for some time now. When I went to the rheumy, I mentioned it, and he said it was probably coming from my back. I have just been reading about hip pain online, and the article said that true hip pain would usually be felt in the groin. It also said that pain that was in the buttocks is usually from the back. I was wondering if my pain is maybe from sciatica, but it does not radiate down into my leg, as sciatica usually does. Last night I couldn't get to sleep because of the pain, and I realized it was the night I was supposed to inject Enbrel. I got up and read a little more while it warmed up and then injected it. This morning my hip hurt a lot less. So it seems that Enbrel does help it. Would it help pain that is not from RA? Does anybody know? It is not bilateral as RA pain usually is, but does RA pain have to be bilateral? Any input would be appreciated. Sue
Guest guest
Sue, I have had horrible hip pain over the past year. It has gotten far worst the past six months. I have gotten shots into the joint three times and each time the shots seem to last far less. My rheummy says I have chronic bursitis in my hip. A few months ago I had it so bad I could barely walk. They Xrayed my hip and it showed toms of cysts and damage. When I got my first shot in the hip the bursa sacs were so big you could feel them. they were the size of an egg. The next time they were the size of oranges and so painful I screamed when he tried to get the shot into them. This last time I now have two lumps...bursa sacs...one large and one small around small plum size. It hurts to sit and it hurts to lay on that side. It burns and hurts if I sit for any legnth of time. If I walk it feels like my whole hip and pelvis are broken. It feels like I have crushed glass in my hip. My pain is rarely bilateral..its usually on one side or the other. I guess I will find out what my rheummy has in the bag in two months when I go back. He was talking Humira....but he would not start it during cold and flu season...he doesn't know yet..but I will not take any injectables...so I guess we will have to find something. Guest guest
My rheumatologist said that my " outside hip pain " was bursitis. She also said that hip pain from RA would be in the inside pelvic area. > > Hi everybody, > > I was wondering if any of you with RA have had any experience with hip > pain. Guest guest
Hi Sue, I get hip pain as well, and it is in the groin area. My daughter, however, gets it in the rear. That is interesting to me that if it is in the rear it is coming from your back. Also, my pain is only in my left hip. My actual diagnosis is inflammatory arthritis nonspecific. My doctor is leaning towards a diagnosis of RA, but is confused by the fact that it is only manifesting on my left side. So it is a " wait and see " type of thing. Sorry I don't have the answers to a lot of your questions, but I did want to comment. I hope this helps! Guest guest
Sue, given your history of breast cancer, shouldn't one of your physicians order imaging of that area? Guest guest
, I've been going for a mammogram of that breast every six months since my lumpectomy. I'm scheduled for another one in February. My new rheumy said that he could order an x-ray, but I decided to wait and see how it progressed. It has been going on for quite a while, because I mentioned it to the " tylenol rheumy " when I saw him in August. Thanks for all of the links. I've been reading about all of the possibilities. Guest guest
Judi, that is strange, I have been having problems with my hips as well (first time) and it is worse when I try to turn over in bed. I had my massage yesterday and she massaged all around the trochanter and greater trochanter and today it is not as bad. Could you get Ron to find the trochanter and massage with any kind of oil? BTW, I had a ride on a scooter last spring and it was so fun. My son found out and told (grandson) that he was not to let me do it again. Then he also added that 's roller blades were off limit as well. What a spoil sport LOL Hugs June ----- Original Message ----- From: nonny46 Boy, I can relate to that! Guest guest
Sue, I didn't mean imaging of your breast, rather of the area that's painful - the lower spine/pelvis/hip. I'm thinking of the possibility of a bone metastasis. Not an MD I'll tell you where to go!
