I just wanted to pass this along for those of you who might be

considering AFOs, or have read that AFOs are the best way to help.

I am posting this just to pass on what we learned this week - not to

influence anyone, or to start any arguments about the pros or cons

about AFOs..it's just to share our families experience....

According to the 2 orthopedists we saw this week, there are many

instances when AFOs are not helpful to those with CMT. Both of

them told us that in our sons case, AFOs would not have helped the

severe foot drop because his heel cannot touch the floor. His

achiles tendons are so tight (even after the first heel cord

surgery) that AFOs were never an option for him. Even at a very

young age. He actually would have been better off having the surgery

on his feet earlier...however with all of his other complications

that wasn't a consideration earlier...now it is.

So, we are looking at surgery both on his heel cords, and to repair

the pez cavus...probably a triple arthrodesis...loads of fun for

him... If anyone has any experience with this and would like to

share...please do so. I am kind of overwhelmed at this point.

Thanks...
