Guest guest
http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2008/06/09/14835_news.html Tears flow for young bully victim Elijah Vetma Danny Lannen 09Jun08 PORTARLINGTON mum Jan Vetma hopes one powerful thing comes of her son Elijah's brave testimony of a friendless life tormented by bullying. Elijah, 12, a sufferer of Asperger and Tourette syndromes spoke out in Saturday's Geelong Advertiser through a letter which touched hearts, induced tears and inspired adults. He said four years of bullying and isolation had led him to contemplate suicide. Elijah's mum said his return to school at Bellarine Secondary College tomorrow might be a defining time with a rich reward. " It would be lovely if he could get a friend out of it, " she said quietly. " That would be nice, one friend. " About 15 strangers took time to phone the Vetma family and share encouragement after reading of Elijah's hardships dealing with disability and relentless bullying. Readers also poured their empathy and concern into a bundle of letters and text messages to the Geelong Advertiser. Adults said he was amazing, young people offered to be his friend, parents identified with challenges. Mrs Vetma said airing the story had given Elijah a lift. " We did get a few phone calls at home, " Mrs Vetma said. " Most people were very encouraging for him and wanted us to hear their story as well ... to let him know that he's not alone and that they feel he has been an inspiration for them as well. " The effect had been affirming. " I think he's quite excited because he feels somebody's listening to him where they haven't before, " Mrs Vetma said. " He feels important which doesn't happen very often and it has given him a real boost, which he needs. " Mrs Vetma again praised efforts of staff at Bellarine Secondary College's to help Elijah. Elijah's father Mick said the story's exposure of difficulties living with disabilities had been welcome. " I think what it has helped to do is for people to see that there are these unsung people in the community, " Mr Vetma said.
