Guest guest
I'm new to the list and hope that I'm not stating the obvious or offending anyone, but I was concerned when I read this article because the surgery sounds complex and it was performed by a podiatrist. I am aware that podiatrists do have specialized training for treatment of the lower extremities (foot/ankle) and there could be many DPMs who would have been qualified to perform this procedure, but a podiatrist is not a traditional " allopathic " medical doctor and in my experience, the practice of podiatry has been limited to non-invasive procedures and minor surgeries. I am in no way criticizing this unfortunate patient or the practice of podiatry or the qualifications of any podiatrist who may have performed procedures for CMT patients. (I myself had toe surgery by a podiatrist.) However, it was surprising to me to hear that a podiatrist would perform something this complicated. If I were having something this complex done, I would be inclined to consult with a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in foot/ankle surgery, since they generally have more extensive training. Is it common for podiatrists to do this in the CMT world?
Guest guest
Hi , I am outrageous by this, one reason I posted it. Some people with CMT DO go to a podiatrist, however, like yourself, if I was requiring anything like this man had, I too would get to an Orthopedist ASAP. Podiatrists do care for the feet, but in more minor ways in general, even for something like toenail care, callouses, etc. I did have 1/2 orthotics made by a podiatrist at first, but at my Internist's prodding, was pointed to a great Certified Orthotist. Anyone who is going to treat ME for infections or do surgery had better belong to http://www.aaos.org/ AND http://www.aofas.org AND have about 20+ years of experience! My feet/our feet are too precious NOT to have the absolute very best of care from the absolutely most qualified M.D.s I enjoy reading your posts. Everything you write, I am nodding my head in a " yes - right on " ! Gretchen
Guest guest
Thank you very much, Gretchen! I'm so relieved by your response. How sad, though, that our fellow CMT-sufferer had to go through this terrible experience. My heart goes out to him and I hope he gets an appropriate settlement for all he had to endure. You are doing a great job of educating all of the members of this group! I'm not sure where you find all of the articles to post, but I find it incredibly encouraging to read about the advances that are being made worldwide. The info on stem cell research is truly amazing! I forwarded the article on Sickle Cell Anemia to my husband and friends. The progress with cell research combined with the knowledge gained by the Human Genome Project means the potential for curing a myriad of diseases in the next decade is HUGE. I wish you continued energy to keep up the great work! It's very much appreciated!!!
