Guest guest
" This editorial is basically on the aftermath on likely momentum on/off lgbt marriage after Prop 8 is defeated or is approved. Can you guys please give feedback? It's not fully ready yet. " http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dfhrng9t_2cghb97fj " This is a hot topic, but I see no reason why it cannot be discussed. To my way of thinking, there are two separate segments of the population that support Prop 8: 1) Defenders of the current legal and religious definition of marriage. While it can be said that some of these people are indeed Holy Rollers and bigots, it would be unfair to throw everyone into that category. Some just feel that marriage is marriage. 2) People who mistakenly lump whackos in with those seeking a legal marriage between two people of the same sex. I must admit that every time I see a gay pride parade, the people who stand out from the crowd are made up men in thongs waving around feathered boas and blowing air kisses to the people who are watching them. I know straight people and gay people, but ANYONE who acts that weird makes me wonder about them. For me, all I do is wonder. But others question the sanity of these people, and so they do not want laws passed which would allow such people to have children if they were married. Thus Prop 8 unpassed would indeed cause couples to have the experiences described in the article, but isn't there something for the argument that a small minority of same sex couples by behaving in a silly way screwed it up for ALL same sex couples? Guest guest
Actually, they do support Prop 8. Prop 8 is a marriage ban. " Well, I think it is as good as any editorial is. But I also think you open yourself up to attack on a number of fronts. The reasons why you believe people are against gay marriage are standard ones that are not necessarily true and tend to pigeonhole and stereotype people. Of course there are people who are against gay marriage for precisely the reasons you state, but I think the biggest hole in your editorial is that people will resent being accused of having feelings or rationalizations that they may not have. I probably do not give all these posts the attention they deserve. Administrator
Guest guest
I terrifically like the angry emotional starkne of that intro. It doesn't protect the complacency of snooty respectable closed minds. It shows them the social wrong they are doing and can't wriggle out of that they are doing unless they change their view to yours. That's how it should be with all social fairness causes. > > This editorial is basically on the aftermath on likely momentum on/off > lgbt marriage after Prop 8 is defeated or is approved. Guest guest
I am probably late for this but wanted to let you know that I did read your document. First thing that struck me as odd was the loved one who carried the marriage license with them, as I have never thought to do in my 18 years of wedded bliss (ha ha) BUT if I were of a same sex couple, it may make sense to carry this hard earned document with me. Second thing I noted was that fact of straight couples offspring needing psychiatric treatment more so than same sex couples. Well, seeing as these couples and offspring would be in the greater majority for far longer periods of recorded history, this would and should be no surprise. That you mention it seems strange given that what has been the overwhelming norm, of course treatment of children by those couples would be more. Third thing was the purpose of marriage. You mention couples who can not have offspring and liken this to same sex couples. The difference between the two is this, some straight couples do not KNOW that they can not become pregnant until after they are married. They may have gone into the union fully believing they would be able to have children. I do not think that the situatation is comparable to same sex couples. As for my own opinion on marriage, I think any relationship between two people that want long term security and legal rights, should be able to make it binding regardless of sex.
