Has anyone here had splints made for their hands and used them? I'm wondering if

they work to keep the hands from getting contracted and to reduce any already

incurred contractions.

Thanks,

Dawn

Hey there, Dawn.

My 13yo son has atrophy in his hands, and wears splints every night.

This is mainly to keep the elasticity/stretch in the thumb region,

between the thumb and pointer finger, so that he can have tendon

transfer surgery in the near future. He has a high tension splint

(with rubber bands doing the work - very funny contraption) for 2-3

times a day at 10-15mins.

We also do nightly massaging of his hands/fingers to try to slow down

the clawing of his hands. He has also been given small stretching

exercises to do during the day. The therapist does not yet want to put

his fingers in splints, as she believes the stretching massage is very

effective.

All the best,

.

I have had splints made for my hands. I really think that they have helped me. I

don't get the muscle cramps that I used to get. My fingers are straighter. I

also went to an Occupational Therapist that specializes in hand therapy. She

gave me a lot of hand exercises to practice. Hope that helps!!

Hi Dawn,

I had something made for me called 'resting hand splints'. They were

rigid mesh type material moulded with heat to fit my arms/hands and

had cushioned straps over my wrists and fingers to hold them

straighter. Whilst they felt comfortable to wear while watching tv or

the likes they felt mighty uncomfortable if i tried to sleep in them

as that was intended. I tried wearing just the one but my hands would

either pull out back into their natural claw shape but if I tightened

the straps to prevent that happening then my fingers would be white

in the morning and also painfully stiff........

Hope this helps. I am always on the look out for something better so

will let you know if I find anything better.

take care

Judith
