Guest guest
I have been in Austin for 10 years and lead the local ASA chapter. We see a neurologist in SA and if you like the one you are seeing I do not recommend switching to one of the few that are here in Austin. Related to the abnormal EEG - a behavioral based program will not change the EEG. An abnormal EEG means something is not working right and medication or possibly a nutritional/biomedical approach is the way to go while integrating the behavioral approach. The Behavioral program has got to have a heavy heavy leaning towards language acquistion, and I do not necessarily mean speech output, vs a " compliance " based behavioral program. I do not recommend the Buda schools, but cannot recommend any others either. The larger districts tend to have more depth in their staff, but staff is spread thin. So much is teacher dependent - a good, current, on the ball teacher who can train and manage her aides is worth alot. Finding one is the challenge. Remember that " good schools " does not necessarily mean their spec education programs are any good. Before moving to Buda, I suggest calling Dr. Jo Webber ( she teaches course on autism and behavioral disorders) at SWT and see if she can tell you anything about local ISD's and their track record when working w/ ASD kids. Often times kids adjust to the issues of lethargy, but it is a known side affect for many anti-epileptic meds. Depakote has less of a lethargy affect for some kids. Most of anti-epileptics also cause weight gain and that is tough to deal with. I would not stop the tegretol w/o your doctor's advice. Not so long ago, abnormal eeg's were not treated. But, research is showing improved outcomes when the EEG is treated. However, make sure all other possible causes have been ruled out - toxicities, metabolic disorders, etc. -Ronnie New to list Hi everyone! My name is and we are in San but will move to Austin area next month. My 4 yr old daughter has been seeing a neurologist who says she has a " processing disorder " which falls under the pdd spectum. When I asked if she was autistic he said he didn't like the term because it is " overused. " He ordered an eeg to check for seizures and did not find any but saw some abnormal brain activity on the left hemisphere so he prescribed Tegretol which does seem to be helping quite a bit. The downside is that it tends to make her lethargic and she has gained 4 pounds since being on medication. My husband wants to get her off med and go with a behavioral approach. Anyone know of good treatment options in Austin area? Also what about schools? We haven't bought house yet but are looking at the Buda area because we have heard their schools are good and we can't afford private. Any information about Austin or general things I need to know would be great. ---------------------------------
Guest guest
, Like Ronnie said, Austin and the surrounding schools are not good. I would stay where you are if you are happy at all. If you really want detailed info I can give it to you, but believe me, it is no better here. I am from the Lake ISD just outside Austin and the surrounding areas, including Buda do not have a good reputation either. I guess it is all what you are looking for. Inclusion is basically nill. Guest guest
Careful - I said I could not recommend any districts - not that any were not ANY good. I do believe there are some districts to stay the heck away from no matter what - others have pockets of good stuff going on, but it is hard to find the good classes and then there is no guarantee the program will stay in place. There is some good stuff going on in RRISD, which emphasizes TEACH, which has good parts but is not sufficient in of itself. There is some good stuff in Eanes - they have an amazing program for younger elementary kids but getting into the class is not a given. AISD has some good stuff going on and they are probably spending more than any other district to improve their autism programs - but it is a HUGE district and resources are spread very thin. It really is a crap shoot - nothing is static. I do know the smaller districts do get their staff to Region 13 trainings but the questions the teachers ask - ones that say they have taught kids w/ autism for years and years - scare the heck out of me. It is sad. Re: New to list , Like Ronnie said, Austin and the surrounding schools are not good. I would stay where you are if you are happy at all. Guest guest
Thanks for all the information. Moving To Austin is not a choice. My dh has been commuting to Austin from San for 4 yrs and the 35 stretch is getting pretty old. We are in Judson Isd and they are really good at inclusion. Both my daughters went to ppcd for speech delay. They have the 3 yr old program in a daycare with 50% " regular daycare kids and the rest are either special ed or bilingual ed. That was the kids have a role model. They provide a spec ed teacher and aide as well as the daycare teacher to work with the kids. My 6 yr old is in a reg K but goes to speech 2X per week and she qualifies for OT which is nothing but having an OT come watch her every now and then. Our neurologist is Dr Seals and he is okay but I would like to asee a psychologist as well to get another perspective. I was hoping Austin would be better because we always hear how wonderful and progressive it is. Our house is sold so we need to move end of May. I am hoping Buda is not that bad - we had been warned about Austin Isd but Buda seemts to have a good reputation. I will have a 1st grader still needing speech and ot as well as a 4 yr old needing pk for speech. We are having her Ard today because they want her to go to summer school and I requested additional testing due to the pdd. Does the new school have to do what Judson recommeds or are we going to have to go thru it all again up there? Thanks so much for the info - I don't know anyone up there! Guest guest
Chances are they will want to look at your children's services and decide for them selves what is appropriate. Given all the growth in Buda, maybe things are better than they have been in the past. My impression is that people are moving there from all over the place so there really could be some new blood w/ some new talent. I think most of central texas has been pretty progressive related to inclusion - w./ the exception of one district near a large body of water for which it is named. I think it all cases the better you know the law, the better you understand your child's needs and the better you can get along w/ the teachers and administrators, the better things will be. Best of luck on your move.- Ronnie Re: New to list , Like Ronnie said, Austin and the surrounding schools are not good. I would stay where you are if you are happy at all. Guest guest
I am hoping we don't have problems in Buda. We had dd's ESY meeting and they told me that the new school distict has to follow their recommendations with whatever programs they have. On the Hays CISD website it mentions full day PK. It is only half day here and a whole day seems pretty long. Can you give me info on support groups and things in the area? I am looking for a place to meet other parents to discuss treatments, doctors etc. Thanks! Guest guest
>>>they told me that the new school distict has to follow their recommendations with whatever programs they have.>>>> The above is not accurate. The recieving school does not have to accept another district's IEP. Your best bet to meet other parents is probably on this list serve. You can call 476-7044 the Capital Area Arc and find out if there is a parent to parent group in the Buda area. I am not aware of one off the top of my head. Any information about Austi! n or general things I need to know would be great. ---------------------------------
Guest guest
They just told me that the esy would have to be followed. As for the support group, the Austin area is fine I certainly didn't expect to find one in Buda. I know there is one in San I can always go to that one if there is not one in Austin. Schleiss wrote: >>>they told me that the new school distict has to follow their recommendations with whatever programs they have.>>>> The above is not accurate. The recieving school does not have to accept another district's IEP. Your best bet to meet other parents is probably on this list serve. You can call 476-7044 the Capital Area Arc and find out if there is a parent to parent group in the Buda area. I am not aware of one off the top of my head. Re: New to list , Like Ronnie said, Austin and the surrounding schools are not good. I would stay where you are if you are happy at all. If you really want detailed info I can give it to you, but believe me, it is no better here. Guest guest
, The new district does not have to follow the present districts IEP. I know that our district did not follow a new family's IEP that came here a few year's ago. I would suggest calling The ARC of Austin to get involved in the programs they have for new families to the area. . Also, Ronnie Schleiss who is on this list , with the Austin ASA will be very helpful. Best of luck New to list Hi everyone! My name is and we are in San but will move to Austin area next month. Guest guest
The austin group has a newsletter. WE use to meet once a month in the evening and have speakers. We still meet once a month during the day for networking - no speakers, no topics, just networking. We put on a couple of workshops a year - just had Gutstein. IF you want to get on our mailing list you can contact me when you get into Buda. - Ronnie Re: New to list , Like Ronnie said, Austin and the surrounding schools are not good.
