I don't know where you were, but at higher levels of altitude, there's less oxygen in the air, so it's harder to breathe. It is especially hard going from sea level to an altitude of over a mile high. This happened to me when I moved from Los Angeles to Cheyenne, Wyoming. It took 3 months for my entire body to 'adjust'.
