I have CMT. Was diagnosed at age 10. I'm 43 yrs. old now. I also have a Thyroid

disease and have to get blood test once or twice a yr. The blood test showed my

calcium was low so my Dr ordered a bone density scan and I was diagnosed with

Osteopenia, that was in Nov. of 07'. I have fallen alot over the years and

fractured my ankles even wearing my AFO braces and have alot of shoulder/neck

and low back and hip pain. I do have herniated disk in my lower back and neck.

I'm not sure if the Osteopenia makes it worse or not.

My Dr. put me on Boniva once a month and 1200 mg. of Calcium with Vitamin D a

day.

Hope this info helps.

I have been taking Fosamax and Calcium prescribed by doctor as well.

I am wondering if ostepenia might be a direct result from CMT or a

secondary effect from decreased muscle mass and less weight bearing.

Machell,

I am unable to take Fosamax due to GI problems (or any of the ossteoporsis

medications). However, it would seem feasible that the lack of ability to do a

lot of weight bearing exercise due to CMT would be a factor in causing

osteopenia/osteoporosis.

I have osteoporosis and lately I can see that my body is turning to fat, i.e.

what I call sausage arms, and legs, with extra weight all over.Oh, well, guess I

will just have to eat less!

Our next CMT meeting is May 21, at the library, and will feature Jay

LaScolea, a pastor from Victory Highway Wesleyan Church speaking to us on

" Coping with a Chronic Disease " . Everyone is welcome. I addressed the public

service announcements to all those with any neuromuscular problem.

Hopefully,we will have a few more attendees.

Joe and I are leaving this afternoon for a week in MS for a granddaughter's

graduation and a short visit. Hope all is going well at your home.

Blessings,

P.
