Guest guest
Cyndi, Remember to consider that your monthly disability award is based on your earnings for the past 10 years. So, if your earnings are dropping and dropping, and your condition is worsening -- better to apply before your 10 years of higher earnings has expired. It doesn't hurt to attempt a disability claim. Guest guest
Cyndi, I am not sure if SSDI is the same for all states. We are in Arizona. I don't remember how long it took to go through the application process, maybe a few months? At the SSDI Dr. appointment the DR looked at Geoff's hands and said " yup-you have CMT " . He didn't need extensive nerve tests or anything-if I remenber correctly it was just a visual exam for him. CMT is on their list as an approved disability. It took a couple more months for them to process everything and get the payments going. Under the disability plan, you still are allowed to work and get pay, up to a certain amount before it affects the SSDI payments. They will look into your work history and may see your reduction in pay/job changes as a (failed) attempt to continue working as your disability affected your ability to work. They may also issue back pay if they feel it is appropriate. The amount we receive per month isn't really enough to live on unless you live in a studio apartment in the 'hood and live off of ramen noodles, but it sure helps our family pay the bills. If you find yourself struggling to work, I encourage you to look into this to see if your monthly benefit amount would be worth it to you. Best of Luck!
