Fiber Art & Textiles From The National Institute of Art & Disabilities

July 11 - August 28, 2008

2018 Street Berkeley, CA

Berkeley, CA (June 18, 2008) " Fiber Art and Textiles " from the

National Institute of Art and Disabilities will open at the

Street Windows Gallery on Saturday, July 12. The exhibit takes place

while NIAD is celebrating 25 years of creativity, promoting

independence, dignity, and community integration for people with

developmental and other disabilities. The exhibition is on through

August 28 and can be viewed 24 hours a day from the sidewalk on

Street. It is free and wheelchair accessible.

This exhibit features a large selection of fiber arts and textiles

created by NIAD artists, including quilts, weaving, custom

embroidered t-shirts, bags, silkscarves, and sculpture. The fiber

works are made from a variety of materials including yarn, donated

cloth and clothing.

Hundreds of artists have worked in NIAD's studio since it began 25

years ago, producing art that has been exhibited throughout the

United States and around the world. The fiber art teachers teach them

the techniques, but the artists make all the creative decisions. In

NIAD's studios, artists can choose to work in a variety of artistic

mediums including painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, and fiber

art.

NIAD is located in Richmond, CA, and was co-founded in 1983 by Elias

Katz, Ph.D., clinical psychologist, and the late Florence Ludins-

Katz, an artist and educator. After pioneering work in their

respective fields, they opened a series of non-profit art centers

dedicated to the belief that all people, regardless of disabilities,

can take part in the creative process. NIAD currently serves up to 50

adults each day, from the diverse cultural, ethnic and socio-economic

backgrounds of Contra Costa and Alameda County.

The Street Windows Gallery is a project of the Civic Arts

Program of the City of Berkeley in cooperation with the Civic Arts

Commission. For information about the Windows Gallery please call
