Guest guest
Hi, MDA covers the cost your insurance doesn't pay. That's what happen yrs ago when my daughter had EMG testing done.(I think that's what it was called) My husbands insurance paid like 80% and MDA picked up and covered the other 20%. Actually that's what happened with all her appointments to MDA clinic. I had CMT when I married my husband and he switched jobs and got new ins. and it was always covered. I'm sure you won't have any problems with your ins. coverage. I wear AFO' on both legs, I had a new set made 4yrs ago and they cost around $2,400.00 I have my own orthotist because I don't go to MDA clinic. I would say due to the rising cost of everything you got quoted a fair price. I live in North Carolina and have mine made in Charlotte. Guest guest
Hi, I have Blue Cross/Blue Sheild here in Florida and picked my own Orthotist and settled with Hanger. Have your doctor write a rx for the AFOs/braces due to Charcot Marie Tooth and bring it with you and insurance covered most of the cost. $150 for me out of pocket for the carbon fiber that I use on my left foot. Hope this info helps. Elaine
Guest guest
In my experience.... I feel orthotists are just high school flunkies, who couldn't find anything else to do in life, until they learned that they could make a fortune bilking disabled folks out of money for brainless (yet, defective .... go figure) workmanship. Also, fault the introduction of Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance into the picture, which was like hitting a gold mine for orthotists, e.g., whereas they used to charge $1,000.00 for a 'service/product', now they charge $5,000.00 because - h*** - that's what the insurance pays them for that same 'service/product'. And, they'll tell you with great big crocodile tears how they are unable to charge you less than what the insurance pays (even though their costs have not increased), because that would be 'discriminatory'. BS. As happy as filthy pigs in mud, orthotists are. Check you bills from orthotists, too. My favorite, to date, was being charged for 8 ankle joints ... when I only have a grand total of 4. These guys are solely in this business to make money, and lots of it. They're not our friends, though they would be glad for you to believe that myth. But, we have to have orthotics, ... so we're screwed. lol ;-)
Guest guest
Call your local MDA office and ask them for help. They should have outside grant funding from other groups they work with to help you with the cost. If they don't help then Call the National office of MDA at 1-520-529-2000 and ask to speak with Jerry Weinberg. Do not call the 800 number because that gets routed back to your local office.
