Re. IOC regulation of caffeine.

I am not sure that the information recently posted is not out of date or

inaccurate.

I searched the WADA 2008 list of proscribed substances in and out of

competition and find no reference to caffeine. I did understand that the

IOC/WADA had indeed abandoned any regulation of caffeine.

I *believe* (without checking) that the NCAA does still regulate or

proscribe caffeine use, though.

Woofie, it's the same in 2008:

" The following substances included in the 2008 Monitoring Program

(bupropion, caffeine, phenylephrine, phenylpropanolamine, pipradol,

pseudoephedrine, synephrine) are not considered as Prohibited

Substances. "

http://www.wada-ama.org/rtecontent/document/2008_List_En.pdf

You may have got hold of the update list instead of the full list.

I'm not sure what the implications of the 'monitoring program' are.

There is no reference to breach levels for caffeine in this document.

As a tested athlete, my understanding of the monitoring program is that the

listed substances are tested for in the program with the caveat that levels are

being looked at, so that if a pattern of specific abuse appears in a sport or

generally for the monitored item, restrictions or a prohibited list position

will be made for that specific sport, or generally, for that monitored item.

They're taking data on the items but not banning them.

Pseudoephedrine had previously been on the banned list but thankfully is not

there currently as it's a nicely effective decongestant. This was a nuisance to

me banned, as a monitored item, I know my own personal RARE usage for sinus

congestion isn't going to trigger any movement onto the banned list lol.

In some sports, the practice of taking several pseudoephedrines to get " up " for

competition had been part of the reason for its banning and the tendency may

still be around....but generally the stuff is now monitored, meaning if there's

not a pronounced abuse pattern it won't be banned again.

The levels where caffeine was previously considered abuse were so high that

well, you'd be sick as hell if you consumed that level and tried to compete!

the comment by my coach long ago was you'd be spending your time in the bathroom

LONG before you got to the level where the testing had it prohibited. 1-2 cups

of coffee before you lift isn't going to get you anywhere near the threshold for

abuse levels lol. Caffeine was not banned in ANY amount, just in a very high

level!

If you aren't familiar with the full list, allowed and prohibited, it's a good

thing to read, print and know. Particularly with cold meds and stimulants, for

example the Octapamine that the lifter had in a creatine that turned out to be

prohibited.

I've run into at least 1 tested adult who had the incorrect notion that they

" couldn't take a commercial acetominophen since they were possibly going to be

tested " . Sigh.

The only time I had to whip out my drug testing card and have the doc call was

long ago after a car accident had really wracked my neck and they wanted to give

me codeine, which I was not permitted (there is a doc's hotline you can have

them call before they give you things). you can get a short lil card that you

can keep in your wallet to help you with the basics on a daily basis, like cold

meds in particular which you might run into questions on. I've also called

USADA and they're pretty easy to talk to. At one point early in my career, I

called and went over my entire list of OTC items, like eye washes, etc, just to

be on the safe side.

It's better to ask the question, look it up, rather than have a positive through

not doing the proper footwork.

Yes, you were sensible. Sometimes I am amazed at how naive some

athletes are about drug testing and how they can make mistakes.

" NIL by mouth " is a good policy unless one asks a sports medicine

doctor who has experience in the drug protocols. Don't rely on a

coach, unless you are *certain* he/she is up to speed on drug testing.

How times change. One slightly ironic by-product from that change of ruling

is that Red Bull have become one of the major sponsors of UK Track and Field

with free product readily available at squads and competitions. Prior to

caffeine bring taken off the list athletes were categorically warned NOT to

take Red Bull!
