A man who endured years of bullying as an office temp is now enjoying his job as a postman, thanks to Royal Mail. Alan MacKay was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome 3 years ago, and was picked on in previous jobs because of his nervous nature. Earlier this year, he was offered a work placement under a successful Royal Mail scheme to help the socially excluded and disadvantaged back to work. Since then - with the help of careful mentoring - Alan has become one of the best postmen at Edinburgh West delivery office. Faichney, delivery office manager, said " he has shown wonderful progress. If I had an office full of Alan's, I could work from home! " Alan was put in touch woth Royal Mail by charity Employment Opportunities Scotland, which helps people with disabilities find and retain work - and now he has a permanent full time walk. Murray, the delivery office workplace coach, chaperoned Alan on the walk until the new recruit felt confident enough to set out alone. He has had only one day off in 8 months since. It came when, despite careful 'familiarisation training', he had a severe panic attack when the delivery office moved site, but colleagues helped him through the crisis. " Alan has been very brave, " said " his condition had prevented him from working to his true potential but he has overcome it. He is totally reliable and has a great relationship with customers. " Alan said: " I worked in offices as a temp before but I did not enjoy that because of all the bullying and the harassment. When I first started at Royal Mail I didn't know how I would cope, but I think I have coped well. My confidence has improved and I'd like this job for the rest of my life. It's good everyone knows I have Aspergers as they are more ready to accommodate me. If people in my other jobs had known, they might have treated me differently " . For helping Alan and others, Royal Mail has won an Employment Opportunities Changing Lives award. He is one of five people with Aspergers employed by Royal Mail in Edinburgh. went to the House of Lords to accept a plaque, following the nomination by Equal Opportunities Scotland. Guest guest
Hi :Thanks for sending an encouraging article. A former supervisor of mine said there was a job for everyone's abilities, if they would not give up looking.
