Christi,

I would strongly recommend that you read Dr. Cave's book, What

Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Childhood Vaccinations. We have met Dr.

Cave and she is not anti-vaccine. She advocates a safe vaccination schedule

without mercury! We give this book to every pregnant friend now. Hope this

helps!

I currently have a 6 1/2 year old son with autism. I am about 6 months

pregnant and don't want to do anything that might put my unborn child in

danger of autism caused by vaccines when it becomes shot time. I also want

my child to be safe from terrible diseases. What should I do??

I think I have posted this before but if are planning not to breast feed then

you might want to think about adding a little clo (cod liver oil, flavored

preferably like lemon lime) to the formula. Most formulas have (or had) the

vitamin a in acetate or palmitate form but the best is the cis form (see

www.megson.com). Also, if you are breast feeding and have a lot of amalgams

(I have 17) then you might want to go easy on the natural chelating foods

such as cilantro, garlic and ginger (I think). The last thing you want is to

loosen the mercury vapors. I don't really know to much of this only that I

read a little bit about it on one of the mercury autism websites (don't

remember which but if I did a search, I could probably find it). I'm just

writing this because I wish I had known about all this when I was breast

feeding (not that this caused my son's autism but it is one big puzzle).

Thanks hon. I didn't know there were such things as natural chelating foods

I will breast feed but only for about a month or so. I will keep that in

mind that i should use CLO. Are some brands better than others?

I appreciate your advise.

Thanks,

la leach league International or www.llli.org is one of the good,

comprehensive web site to look for information on breastfeeding. There are

many websites that encourage breastfeeding and provides lot of content on

BF. As noted in the earlier post, just google 'breastfeeding' and you will

be amazed by the amount of information that is out on the net.

Breast milk is not best (coz i don't see anything that compares to it), but

it is the most natural food a baby should eat after birth. I have seen in my

own experience that even the just born baby knows what is food and where to

look for it. It is very natural. I heard from a lactation consultant that

they can even smell...(that's the reason you don't force the baby to open

the mouth, you got to just guide in the right way.

Usually, just born babies take time to vigorously suck since their sucking

reflexes are not very strong. And just born babies are like that. They are

out in the world, a new place, everything new, they too take time to

adjust. Most often we think this as a problem and start alternate feeding.

Babies know how to suck even before they are born. Pumping and feeding is

boring and tiresome. I had to do it when i went back to work, but when i

decided to stay home with the baby, it felt great to just put the pump in

the storeroom, it used to be such a discomfort even physically.

Personally, i think if i was your daughter, i would repeatedly offer the

breast as often as i can, after doing it for 2/3 days the baby will just

love it. I cant speak what if it doesn't happen the way it should, and

fortunately i haven't had that experience and cant speak for it.

Also, i am not all against formula. I don't know much about it, might work

for some people. I am being always told by docs after my baby's 9 month well

check up to supplement formula because according to them BM does get watery

and will have less fat as the baby grows older (there might be some fact to

this, if the mother does not take the right calories, 500 calories more than

normal i think...(don't remember exactly) then there might be shortage and

the milk might contain less fat) etc. But nutrition wise, it will still be

great.

(this may not be relevant as a reply to the original post, but might help

others)

Also, pediatricians dint take into consideration the breastfed baby while

doing a weight chart comparisons. As per WHO, the weight chart for BF babies

is different from the one used to see where your child falls or

compare (which peds think is the normal chart).

Good luck

So much good advice already. In regards to the fact that people often say that a

baby can do " just fine " on formula, sure, they can do fine, and in scenarios

where formula truly is the only option, " fine " has to be good enough. But don't

we want all our kids to do " great " rather than " just fine " ? Might be an angle to

approach it with if your daughter is feeling frustrated and feeling pressured to

give in to formula. I had a friend with a preemie and the nurses would tell her

" she'll be just fine on formula. " My friend would reply, " I don't want her to be

just fine, I want her to be the best she can be! "

Good luck!

When my son was five days old, he became seriously jaundiced. They admitted him

to the hospital and told me that I shouldn't breastfeed him because of the " risk

that it was breast milk jaundice. " I know enough about breastfeeding to know

that breastmilk jaundice, while it exists, is VERY rare, and the jaundice

doesn't show up for at least two weeks.

So, every time they left us alone, I would nurse him, then pour out an

appropriate amount of formula. When they would ask how much he'd eaten, I'd

just point at the bottle and let them look for themselves. His bilirubin count

began to come down - despite the fact that I was breastfeeding him. After two

days, I politely asked the doctor if I could resume breastfeeding. He basically

said that if I didn't care about my son's bilirubin count going back up, then go

ahead. I just shook my head and said, " of course I wouldn't want it to go back

up. " All the while knowing that my son had been getting breast milk all along

and absolutely confident that it was the healthiest thing he could get.

There is very little more than lip service to breastfeeding from the medical

community.

Terri

P.S. Lest anyone feel the need to berate me for not following doctors orders, I

had actively researched breastfeeding prior to having any children. If medical

students get anything at all, they get a brief statement that breastfeeding is

best. Then they get schooled in formula feeding. I know that I knew far more

than the doctor about breastfeeding, breast milk jaundice, and the effect of

breastfeeding on a jaundiced baby.

Terri,

Far from berating you, I applaud you! Every time I hear something like this I

am just amazed at what our " professional " medical doctors are taught and not

taught in school.

While my preemie was in the hospital, they wanted to " spike " my milk with

formula. When I asked them not to do that, they said " Well, okay, but if she

stops gaining weight, we'll have to add the formula back in. " So I asked if

there was a way that I could enrich my milk. This was pre-NT for me, so when

they said that I shouldn't do " that " (but of course, they didn't explain

what " that " was) because it wouldn't be good for my health, I believed them.

Now I know better. I wish I had known then that drinking whole milk and eating

lots of butter would have been good for both me and my preemie baby. Oh well,

at least I know it now and Cosette has benefitted from it.
