Geoff,

This really makes me crazy! It's not you , if your braces hurt you- they were

made wrong! I can't tell you how many times I have seen this or heard about it.

I have no pro title except that I have been wearing braces for about 50 years.

In this world you have to take control of your life and stand up for yourself. I

wish I could go with each person that's having a hard time with this. (If your

in SE Fl. I will)

Geoff,

They shouldn't hurt if they are made right and fitted to your legs. Do

they have ankle joints? I was miserable in a pair without ankle joints

so that might be an issue too. Some othotists make the footplates so

thick that they are hard to wear too. I'm on im at

cockerham_2000 if you want to talk, maybe I can help.

My husband's first set of AFOs were plastic and molded from casts of his legs;

they were adjusted many times but never to his satisfaction. The ones he got

with from a different orthotist, are metal and don't hurt. The metal doesn't

touch his legs. He is usually too lazy to put them on, but they don't hurt when

he wears them.

Geoff,

I bet your orthotist just used the wrong joint. Mine have a joint

called a Gillete joint. It is thin and the materials he used kevlar

and graphite make them thin and strong. I suspect the orthotist

doesn't have any idea what works and what doesn't when it comes to

shoes. You are just supposed to wear what he makes. Why not tell him

the ankle joints are too thick and won't work and get him to remake

your AFOs so you can get some shoes. Let him know what the problem is.

Geoff,

Also, I just got back form BBQ fest here in Memphis. I wore my short

AFOs, the camo ones, with a pair of combat boots, the orthopedic ones

made by PW minor for the army. I was able to walk all over the place

and enjoy the festival. There is no need for your AFOs to hurt. They

were just made wrong. They are supposed to help you do what you want

to do not hinder you.
