Strange Dragonfly

Today while I was out watering the plants, I just happened to notice a very strange dragonfly. While there are many species of dragonfly around here, I've never seen one like this before. This was a little smaller and leaner than the others, and it had an odd coloring. The main color was a kind of pale, powder blue with black between the sections of its body. Most interestingly, its wings were completely invisible.

This dragonfly stayed very close to the ground, just above the grass, but that would have been because I was following it around. When it flew, you could just pick out the movement. When it landed or was hovering, you could barely see it even if you had been staring right at it when it stopped.

Sad to say but there is no picture of it. It was hard enough following it around the yard. Going inside to get the camera would have made it nearly impossible to find it again.

It is interesting though the variety of the dragonflies. Around here they get average size, but a few miles away where the college is, they are several times larger, almost the size of a small hummingbird. At the college, most are very bright, metallic colors, greens and blues mostly with the occasional red. But here, they are more muted, versions of the same colors, and they also tend to have more variety of colors on their bodies rather than being monochrome.
