Guest guest
I have X-link CMT (CMTX-1). I inherited it from my mother. Currently I have a child on the way, 1st one. I was told that all female offspring of affected male inherit the abnormal gene. Is this the case for male offspring?
Guest guest
Hello ! I have never been tested to see which type of CMT I have, but I have done tons of research, seen many doctors, including genetic specialists. I believe it's 1A. Even before my husband & I were married, talks about children came up of course. We decided, after much discussion, many doctor visits, and genetic counseling not to have children of our own in order to not take a 50% chance of passing on the CMT gene. Surely CMT is not the worse disease out there, but we both felt it was something we needed to do...or not do as the case may be! Our own personal, individual choice, of course. We decided we'd adopt if we felt the desire for children, but our lives have been wonderful & complete without them, and we have no plans of doing so. I ended up having lots of uterine problems and had to have a hysterectomy at 33, so I believe God did not have plans for us to have children. Turns out, I just never had the energy for kids anyway! We're in our 40's now. From what I understand from all the research, consultation & reading I've done over the last 20 years, when A PERSON WHO HAS/CARRIES THE CMT GENE (WHETHER MALE OR FEMALE) HAS A CHILD, THAT CHILD (MALE OR FEMALE) HAS A 50% CHANCE OF RECEIVING THE CMT GENE. Also, in my understanding, when a person carries the CMT gene, symptoms WILL develop in some form or another at some time in that person's life. They could be very, very mild to extremely severe, early in life to very late in life. I do not believe it matters what type of CMT it is. That's one of the many perplexing things about CMT. Thanks be to God for the genetic/chromosomal research that is being done to find out the different types, degrees, etc! HELP! Is there a doctor or geneticist in the house that can clear this up for sure?
