Re: Intramuscular stimulation for neuropathic pain

I have been receiving IMS as an additional part of my physiotherapy approach

for CMT.

I find that there are benefits, indeed the IMS reaches where a deep

myofascial massage cannot (such as the tibialis interior muscle, which is

kind of behind the shin, and when tight pulls up on the arch in the foot -

needless to say my arch is high and my tib int short).

The needles used are the super thin acupuncture needles, about 2 to 3 inches

in length, and inserted deep into the muscle and moved around to stimulate a

muscle contraction and release. I have a lot of work done around my shins,

my calves, my peroneal. When done my feet feel exhausted (like a long day

walking) - but I do not have needles in my feet. And odd sensation.

I am also having my hamstrings and hips treated.

If I am really tight I can only take about 20 pokes each side. If I am more

relaxed I can take more.

I have to warn anyone interested - this is extremely painful for someone

with CMT. Sometimes my nerves fire like the worst EMG ever imagined, when

she gets too close to a nerve. But I know there are benefits, so I stick

with it. It also causes a stress-like reaction for me for the 30 minutes I

get it - I have been told this is normal, but as a result I feel very

exhausted after a treatment.

If anyone has any other questions, let me know.
