Guest guest
Something unusual happened when my daughter and I were at a political rally recently. When we drove to the campus of BGSU, I was just following my map that I got off of Mapquest. I was heading for the parking lot closest to the Arena. When we were about there we noticed the police in the street. The policeman came over to the car and asked if we were going to the rally. We told him we were and he directed us to turn left at the second drive, which we did. We thought it was unusual that there were still so many empty spaces. (upon exiting later I saw the sign that said " Faculty Parking Lot " ) We found a nice spot very close to the arena. People were walking in from all directions. We got the wheelchair out of the trunk and while we were getting it ready some women walked by and started talking to us. They asked, " How did you get to park in here? " We said, " Well, the policeman told us to park here, maybe it is for handicapped, we don't know. " THEN THIS WOMAN LOOKED ME OVER AND ALL OF A SUDDEN DECIDED THAT I WAS NOT WORTHY TO BE CALLED HANDICAPPED AND PARKING IN THIS PRIME SPOT!!! SHE SAID, " YOU'RE CHEATING!! " I WAS SO SURPRISED (AND SO WAS SUE) THAT I DIDN'T HAVE A COMEBACK FOR HER. Later I thought of what I may have said to her, but at the time Sue and I said nothing! I told Joe (husband) I should have said, " Well maybe you should try walking around with a neuro-muscular disorder like CMT and see if it feels like you are CHEATING! " Joe said, " No, that would not have been a good thing to say. " So I guess it is just as well that I kept my mouth shut. I was upset about it later. Sue & I only parked where we were told to, we waited an hour in line just like everyone else (in the cold) and we were told where to sit inside where the wheelchair would work. It just bugs me that people like her think they know so much, WHEN THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT! Just because my braces are hidden by my pant legs, and my atrophied legs and feet are not apparent to the casual observer does not give her the right to judge my abilities! Well there! I vented now and perhaps I can just get on with my happy life now. At least we had a wonderful time at the rally and did not dwell on her comments until later. May God Bless You Always!
