Guest guest
M. Green, So glad you posted! My son is checked for scoliosis at every doctors appointment with his pediatrician and his neurologist. I never realized how closely associated it is with CMT either. His shoulders seem to be rounding slightly but nothing has been diagnosed. If I may ask, what does your school system consider to be " adaptive PE " ? Sharing info like this is so vital to parents of CMTers. I just found out that my son will have to take Personal Fitness to graduate...and he can do it on line?! To me that's so bizarre... Guest guest
, I had a 1 unit 'requirement' in PE in college. I never bothered to sign up for it. One semester away from graduation, the registrar informed me I could not graduate without taking PE. (I had been medically excused from PE since 7th grade!) After talking with my parents, my advisor and the coach, it was decided that I could receive the 1 unit of credit for PE by writing a paper on the 'value of bike riding'. The consensus was that this was 'adaptive PE' for me. This was in the early 70s, and I considered the whole thing a joke. (no one thought to count my free hours in the pool, on the bike, or horsebackriding) Meanwhile I jammed out five easy pages on biking and lol, got an " A " in PE. Here's some info that may be of help http://www.pecentral.org/adapted/adaptedmenu.html http://www.pecentral.org/adapted/adaptedwhatis.html Gretchen

Guest guest
In California I have had to get the doctor to fill out the school form and excuse my CMT kids from P.E. Since P.E is a graduation requirement I asked the doctor to request that the kids have the option of doing a home study or a work book for P.E.I had to really fight the school for this, until I had the idea for the doctor to prescribe it. In the two hour meeting with the school team I had to keep repeating to them that they were not doctors or physical therapist and to just leave my kids alone. Fun Times. Guest guest
Adaptive PE - as well as just regular PE - is a joke. A waste of time.

Guest guest
Get the PE requirement administratively waived. PE is stupid in general, but particularly for CMT folks, as it will tire us out when we need to be alert later to study. Really, your child probably gets all the exercise needed through daily living, and at home. Besides, it will free up an extra slot for a worthwhile class in junior/senior high, which will actually be of benefit to your child later in life. > > Hi > > I have heard this term thrown around and was curious exactly what it means. > My son will have to take gym five days a week next year and that will be > difficult. Guest guest
Running is tough for anybody with CMT. I'm not a doctor or even a father for that matter. I also don't know what a 504 is, but I would reccomend swimming. It's a good work out for almost every muscle in the body, and extremely good cardio. If that's a possiblity.
