Guest guest
I had a Texas Rehabilitation Commision help with my college tuition until I changed my major to a church related field. That was in the early 70's. Guest guest
I am getting assistance now...but where I am living here in Texas, they are not giving as much assistance as they were just a year ago or so. Most of my assistance is coming from my government Pell grant. I get assistance because of my SSI. I know they help or did help people with college and in getting to and from college and work..eg if you needed a scooter to help you get around campus, then they would assist with that if they saw a need. They'll also help with books, but I think you have to be on the low income side of things. The assistance can aid you if you meet their criteria, but I also find that it can be a hassle, because of the amount of paperwork that is involved. But if you're like me, then every little bit helps! Guest guest
Hi Rose: Yes, I applied for VR assist. and they told me it was for people who were once in the work force and something happened to them. It is not for those (me) who were never in the work force but thought about joining. I have friends in the same boat as me who receive assistance from them. They are not Lp. Guest guest
Rose, At the time of my experience with DVR it was back in 1975. Two weeks before I was to graduate from high school, a concellor from DVR showed up at my School to inform me and a friend that we would get assistance from this program for a school of our choice. Well that was a pack of lies and she was a crook. She ended up telling me I only had one choice at a Drafting School, and only the tuition was paid for by DVR. I didn't recieve my Housing Allowance, my Food Allowance, and Parking Allowance. My Concellor though drove a brand new Corvette every year, thanks in part to all the money she scammed out of her clients. When I graduated from that school she informed me that was all they would do to help me, period. Two years later, I got a call from DVR, wondering if I wanted to continue schooling or needed anything from them, and informed me that my old concellor was in prison for stealing from her clients. I had a great job and at the time didn't need their assistance, two years later the program folded and became CETA. Unfortunately the program was new and they didn't know what they could help you with. By the way, this was in Illinois, a state that had alot of problems with programs of this kind back in the 70's and early 80's. There is a silver lining though. I moved to Washington State and after a year and a half of trying to get a job with the government out here I found that if you went to DVR they could help you get employment with the Federal Government. Believe me, they helped me. I've worked for the Department of Defense for 17 years, and do to my Spinal Compression, I'm looking at surgery soon, and DVR's help again. And believe me, they are there to help. If you can not get results, call a congressman. They a Federally Funded Program ran by the States for assisting people of disability to get them into the work force through Schooling, Vocational Training. If you cann't get someone to confirm that you qualify as disabled, take your medical records down to their offices. The only obstical is if you have DVR in your state still. Rose, good luck, my best wishes for you. Guest guest
You mention you retrained in another field. My husband's SSDI was denied but he qualifies for vocational rehab. He is having a difficult time deciding on a field not knowing how limited he may be by the time he is ready to work. He is also nearing 50 years old. Not many years left in the work force before retirement.
