Guest guest
We did DAN for a while with my son and he also was on many supplements for a while. After deciding to start the treatment, I stopped all his supplements. I did this almost all at once and did not wean them off. Part of it, I was tired of giving them and I and my son needed a break from doing this. I also wanted to let his system clear anything out and to let his body rest from having to deal with these extras and process them. My son, however is a non-responder also to vitamins and I was nearly positive that he would not have any issues from removing something that he was benefiting from. The reverse actually happened, he actually started making notable gains a few weeks later and has continued on with this as well. I believe this is also due alot to our sensory program (handle) that we do that has helped tremendously. I wonder if his body had a hard time metabolizing all the large doses of vitamins, etc., if his system was already overloaded from other causes. I did restart a probiotic, MVI, Ca+, cod liver oil, and digestive enzymes, and I do not think it is too much on his system at regular doses. This is our experience, but I have heard some kids also responding to larger doses of certain supplements / vitamins. We are wondering whether we should just wait to see Dr. Goldberg or we should wait and see what he says. My reasoning for taking her off before we go there is I would not want to take her off at the same time as starting something he prescribes and make it difficult to evaluate what is contributing to any changes (positive or negative). Any thoughts on how we should handle this? Are there any supplements that he is fine with?
Guest guest
Thank you to everyon who responded about the supplements. The responses were very clear and consistently said " take her off " . That was the deciding factor in our discussion about it and it really makes sense!! Did anyone notice a regression when they took there kids off of them for those who tried DAN or something similar? Guest guest
We have an appt in August for starting the treatment. He has very high viral levels, and I believe it will target the cause of his problems much better. I do think much of the reason also is due to our HANDLE program. I do not know about the digestive enzymes and . They are really just as they say, enzymes that are aiding in digestion. We are actually trying to increase my son's cholesterol, it is only 110 and more research is showing this is really not high enough, and it really can affect brain myelenation with the fats and the neuro system. Hope whatever you do, goes well. Angie Caroline <carrieps@...> wrote: Angie, That is interesting that he started to do better. My daughter has had no noteable response to the supplements. Guest guest
, I asked Dr. Goldberg about digestive enzymes (specifically Peptizyde) many years ago and he said no. There were a couple of reasons. * it¹s best just to avoid giving a child something that may be bothering them than to feed it to them * the supplement may itself bother them and also may not break the food down completely Basically, enzymes might just bring more variables into an already complex medical situation. That said, I suppose that probiotics could be considered digestive enzymes, and he is fine with Kyodophilus. So, best to check with him before trying anything new and hearing the reasoning behind his opinion, which has always been very practical in my experience! Caroline G. Guest guest
We actually noticed a slight improvement in my son's speech and interaction. I think the supplements may have been upsetting his stomach (even multivitamins make me queasy). Good luck. Guest guest
Lots and lots of people who saw improvements on supplements are shocked to see improvements when they take their kids off. Regressions are not reported very often, but progress often is. My son improved on fish oils, but the longer he was on them the more sensitive he become to it, and I never noticed how much darker the circles under his eyes got, because we had long passed the window of suspicion on it. He developed rashes but it was after 2 months on it - so of course I didn't suspect it then either. When we took him off, his behavior really improved, even though I had thought he initially responded to it. Guest guest
My ND sells pharmaceutical grade supplements as well and only from companies that perform quality tests on each and every batch. Cheap supplements are not of the same quality ingredients as pharmaceutical grade supplements nor do they have quality assurance standards. Guest guest
I know nothing about any particular doctor's products. They might be great. They might not be. Some vitamin products are obscenely expensive given what they are. Others are very good deals. What do you mean by " pharmaceutical grade " ? Thats a fairly ambiguous term. Do you mean GMP or USP or what? Now you are the one making the blanket statements! I said that SOME inexpensive brands were vary good, while other expensive brands are crap. All in all, the relationship between quality and price is not predictable. More expensive often does not mean better. Sometimes it does. Obviously, some ingredients are expensive and they tend to be expensive nomatter who you buy them from. Dr Berkson, and other Drs who treat with supplements insist on > pharmacutical grade ,like Metabolic Maintenance, not because they make > them, but because they know they have what they say are in them-Dr > Berkson does not make money from selling them ,but insits that regular > supplements do not have what they say is in them. Guest guest
I know of a source for high grade suppliments Dr. Pall's nutritional supplements for the chemically sensitive Allergyresearchgroup.com This recommendation came from another physician who is not affiliated with the manufacturing of the product. > > > Dear Live-as I understand it, you are not a chemist , how can u make > statements that cheap supplements are as good as pharmicutical > grade?????Dr Berkson, and other Drs who treat with supplements insist on > pharmacutical grade ,like Metabolic Maintenance, not because they make > them, but because they know they have what they say are in them-Dr > Berkson does not make money from selling them ,but insits that regular > supplements do not have what they say is in them. Guest guest
Hello, Let me clear some things up about supplements. Those in the industry understand the terms Truth in Labeling. There are no federal tests as far as this is concerned when testing for truth in labeling. Anyone can pull a plant out of the ground, grind it, put it in a pill, put it in a bottle and label it and sell it. No one is mandated to test the accuracy of the label. It is considered a Dietary Food Supplement and very little to no laws (execpt drug laws) govern it. The FDA does not evaluate these supplements. Now that you understand that consider this. Lets say you want to take some echinacea for the common cold. You have your choice between two different bottles from two diff manufactures at your local health food store. Both are labeled echinacea. But one manufacture takes the whole plant, grinds is up and puts it in pill form. The other manufacture separates the leaves and stems, locates the main active ingredient that is beneficial to health, and quantifies that ingredient to a standardized milligram per pill. Obviously the latter is the one you want to choose. Also consider some other supplements like flax seed oil beneficial for its essentail fatty acids (great for brain health) need to be cold pressed to maintain the health benefits of the seeds. If not they essential fatty acids are destroyed. This is just one example of some other things to consider when buying supplements wether they are labeled pharmacutical grade or not. In my opinion it is best to stick with national brands that have developed their own line of quality checks and control. However if you are buying from not as well know sources(and there are many) please make sure they have there own quality control checks and truth in labeling checking for accuracy of potency. I dont own stock in GNC and i dont work for them, but some of their in house brands go through 85 different quality control checks and accuracy in labeling. If ever one bottle was to be mislabeled from GNC they would stand to lose close to 60 years of their good reputation in the dietary supplement industry and they understand this and take proactive steps with this in mind. Its a safe place to shop when you have doubts in the supplement market and deciding where to buy your supplements from. Just my humble opinion however. If you have any doubts of your supplements there are various labs that can actually give you a chemical/nutrional break down of the pills they examine to test for this truth in labeling. Guest guest
Would be interesting that every person from this group write a mail and tell us his CMT type, and what sppplements is using for the " treatment " I'll start first! 1. I have CMT 2 (axonal) 2 I take vitamin E, fish oil, B complex vitamin, I eat curry, and somethimes I take zinc supplements  Please don't ignore this mail. I think that many of us are interested in this. Thank you! Orania
Guest guest
Orania, I've never been typed, I was diagnosed before they did that. I take for allergies Niacin and C For the CMT I take Fish Oil, B6 and B12, chelated CalMagZinc, and Cod Liver Oil also a generous tablespoon of Lecithin at breakfast and supper. I also eat a bowl of slime composed of berries tofu and yogurt for breakfast, and a large green salad liberally sprinkled with ground flaxseed for supper. Dinner is 4-500 calories of whatever I come across at the time. Unfortunately I tend to cheat a lot. Ed
Guest guest
Orania, I have CMT 1A. I take; Ascorbyl Palmitate, Citicoline, a multi, a drink called Xango, and when I remember - something called Myelin Sheath Support (but that one you have to take on an empty stomach, so I forget). I do make sure to eat things like curry and other spices that are beneficial. Other than that I do whatever my herbalist tells me ... LOL I also go to Bikrim yoga 6 times a week. There is a doctor that comes to class that just offered to treat me with a hyperbaric chamber ... he said that he has had success with many illnesses and believes it might help the CMT too. He offered to do it at no cost. I'd be happy to let you know if I receive any benefits. Peace,
Guest guest
My daughter has type 4C. She takes CoQ10, which has helped a lot with leg pain, a multi vitamin, fish oil and carnitine. I'm trying to figure out if it's safe to give her Citicoline (or other supplements) and how much. She's only 5, so I want to be careful before just jumping into something, but the medical doctors have pretty much pooh-poohed any supplements. Some people have mentioned herbalists. Do any of you work with naturpaths and/or other non-traditional practitioners who guide your use of supplements? Any recommendations as to the best type to work with on this? Guest guest
Orania, I take Citicoline, B12, Niacin (for cholesterol, 500 mg timed release), C (timed release 1000 mg), magnesium (leg cramps), Calcium and D. I intend to add fish oil soon as I've heard good things. I take all but the niacin twice a day, and the niacin three times a day with food. I do not take a statin as the niacin handles my high cholesterol. J. Warren
Guest guest
Sherry ... My herbalist is a naturopath ... he guides me with all of this. I have known him for years and know that he is reputable and honest. He will advise people to change their lifestyle before trying to " sell " things to them, if that is what they need. My best recommendation to you is to find someone you trust in that same way. Good Luck,
Guest guest
Sherry, I use iherb.com to research and purchase supplements. This site is rather extensive and lists products by brands and category. They offer great descriptions and information along with consumer product reviews that I have found very helpful. iherb.com also has the best selection of brands and the best pricing on the web. I have started taking the L-carnitine along with alpha lipoic acid and D-ribose before excercise and have experienced a huge difference in fatigue levels. I found this information in the archives. We are all different and it took me awhile to find what worked for me.
