Guest guest
Hello Fiona, I had a neurologist tell me a few years ago that many people with CMT are predisposed to alcohol and drug addiction because of the pain we live with. The human body is an incredible machine, and it is constantly looking for ways to heal itself as well as finding sources for pain relief. When your body finds relief from alcohol and or drugs, it automatically latches on and becomes " good friends " . Unfortunately, many people with CMT don't realize they have the disease and can't quite figure out why they have become addicted to alcohol and or drugs. Sometimes, with the proper medical regimen and intervention, people who were married to alcohol and drugs can begin to live a normal life without the excessive and out of control urge to use alcohol and drugs to combat the pain. I know first hand, because this was my scenario. Unfortunately though, there are many people with CMT who can't resume the consumption of alcohol or drugs, because their bodies have become predisposed to excessive consumption. Additionally, excessive consumption of alcohol is a huge NO NO for people with CMT, because it only makes matters worse. An occasional glass of wine or a cocktail is fine, as long as it doesn't become a ritual. Mark
