The anti-low-carb contingent likes to conflate ketosis with ketoacidosis,

Not only is that author on crack he's probably got both hands deep in drug

company pockets.

ok, good. thanks, guys!

i was reading that and thinking it was wildly bogus, but i don't completely

understand ketosis and acidosis yet, so i wanted to be sure about that

part. thanks for the links too!

The author is confusing ketosis which is a physiologic metabolic state with

ketoacidosis which is a condition that goes with diabetes, usually type I.

I could try and explain them as I understand them but I would probably say

something not exactly right so instead I'll suggest doing a search on the

web and reading for yourself.

The author is saying that if you do not eat carbohydrates, you can develop

this very serious condition. This is a common argument waged by critics of

Atkins and low carb diets. It reflects that such critics really do not know

what they are talking about.

have a question about it:

High-protein, very-low-carbohydrate weight-loss diets are designed

to induce ketosis, a state that also occurs in uncontrolled diabetes

mellitus and starvation. When carbohydrate intake or utilization is

insufficient to provide glucose to the cells that rely on it as an

energy source, ketone bodies are formed from fatty acids. An

increase in circulating ketones can disturb the body's acid-base

balance, causing metabolic acidosis. Even mild acidosis can have

potentially deleterious consequences over the long run, including

hypophosphatemia, resorption of calcium from bone, increased risk of

osteoporosis, and an increased propensity to form kidney stones.6
