I could try and explain them as I understand them but I would probably say something not exactly right so instead I'll suggest doing a search on the web and reading for yourself. The author is saying that if you do not eat carbohydrates, you can develop this very serious condition. This is a common argument waged by critics of Atkins and low carb diets. An increase in circulating ketones can disturb the body's acid-base balance, causing metabolic acidosis.
