the link below is a pop-media quickie about lowering cholesterol

through diet... a particularly pungent reminder of the gap

between " us " and " them " ...

i love the letters " phd " attached after this guy's name.

someone should " punch him dizzy " ...

i bet gorilla's eat a lot of soy dogs too...

" plant sterol margarine " + raw almonds + " soy burgers and hotdogs,

cold cuts and soy milk " + " different bean entrees " = ???

i love the way it can be blithely assumed there's a magic ideal

cholesterol number that everyone should strive for...

almost every sentence here is a zinger...

love the way he's quick to defend drug therapy, almost as if to

apologize for suggesting a dietary approach...

there's also something quite surreal about this line:

" I think that any dietary change that one does should be done in

consultation with your physician " . we hear this kind of line all the

time, but let's think about what that really means. the only

interpretation i can come up with is " keep eating the pizza, bagels,

donuts, etc until you get approval from your doctor to start with

vegetables, nuts, etc; only people who have a smattering of knowledge

from medical schools can really assess the risks of this kind of

change " ...

just an easy target, but the most important part of this article is

not in the text, but in the background: " abcnews " . that is my main

point in sharing this ugly poem of folly.

hey mike, you left out some of the best ones...

" We had some interest in looking at the evolution of the human diet.

The thinking was that for much of our evolutionary development over

the last 10 or 15 million years, we would have been predominantly

vegetarian. And if you look at the great apes living presently, they

are, for the most part, eating a vegetarian diet. So genetically

we're designed for basically a fruit, nut and vegetable diet. "

" The problem with a simian diet was that it's a full-time job. You

were basically eating about 5.5 kilos of food a day, which took about

eight hours a day... "

" We also looked at C-reactive protein (CRP), because it is an

inflammatory biomarker. It has been demonstrated in some studies to

increase risk for heart disease. We did see a nice reduction, and

basically it was the same level of reduction achieved through

statins... " (hmmmmm...but still, you blame cholesterol...)

hey, a " smattering of knowledge " is more than most people have. LOL!

Did you notice the sponsor? My pop-up stopper killed them before I could see

all if them but " Special K " was unmistakable.

I didn't see where it said how long the study lasted.

He did admit that the statins do cause a few problems.

Clinically controlled diets such as this do not necessarily reflect what

will happen in a free living population.

I can't see anyone staying on such a tasteless, limited diet for any length

of time. I know I'm not about to give up my rib eye steaks, butter, eggs,

etc. for that bunch of garbage.

Enjoy! ;-)
