I can't say for chicks but I raised baby birds on boiled chicken

eggs ... it was my Mom's idea, the birds had fallen out of a nest

and she said the thing to feed them was mashed eggs, mixed

with water, via an eyedropper down their gullet. They lived,

which is a feat in itself with baby wild birds! They were sparrows,

which eat mainly bugs, which I'd guess is what baby chicks are

designed to eat.

Also my aunt was in an experiment where they fed rats

nothing but boiled eggs. Rats did fine.

When we got " Easter chicks " Mom fed them boiled

eggs and hominy grits ... obviously a Southern thing,

I'd guess that is what her Mom fed their chicks (they

kept chickens when she was a kid).

I would NOT feed them raw eggs though. If they

get a taste for " real " eggs they can start eating their

own eggs, which is a problem sometimes.

I think the main problem, for most folks, is the expense. But

if you have an " egg overdose " ... if you try it, let us know

how it goes. I'd be tempted to use boiled eggs and kefiili,

and some greens (and grits?). The kefiili (or kefir) keeps the bad bacteria

count down. The one issue I can think of is that chick starter

has an antibiotic in it because a lot of chicks can die otherwise ...

the kefir might work instead.

Belinda, I'm assuming you have hens and a rooster?

IF you have fertile eggs then you can do it.

Question is, what breed(s) do you have? what are you wanting for

offspring? Layers or Meat birds? Depending on what breed of rooster

you have and breed of hen you have will determine what chicks you

get.

Are you going to let the hens set the eggs and brood the chicks or

are you going to incubate the eggs yourself?

It's cheaper and easier to buy the chicks. There are hatcheries all

over the USA and incubation is an art in itself.

Getting the chicks is not a problem, we have 9 dozen eggs due to hatch any

day now. I was asking about feeding them on just eggs. Figured hard boiled.

Would like to do without the antibiotics in most chick starters.

Someone mentioned that feeding poultry fermented

foods helped with bacterial issues ... I'd guess it

would work for chicks too. Kefir and eggs?

--- I raised some on hard boiled eggs, soaked grain cracked in a

blender and raw milk. They love the eggs and milk. Some died and I'm

sure why. You gotta keep them from getting plugged up and also watch

for overeating.Dennis
