i went through this a bit ago. but we raised our pigs on pasture and

organic house slops, and they turned out just fine, with no worms and quite

tasty. so if you can find some good pork, go for it!

He is right that Jews (as well as many Messianic Jews and many

Christains) do not eat pork. The primary reason is religous, in

fact, as in the book of Leviticus God calls pigs unclean and unfit to

be eaten.

Many people follow God's food laws not because they feel they *have

to*, but because they truely believe that God's word is infallible

and that the food laws were not given to arbitrarily control a group

of people, but rather to promote the best health possible. Maybe

this is what your butcher was talking about. It is true that pork is

frequently contaminated with parasites and toxins. The digestive

system of a pig is much more acidic that that of say a cow. Because

their stomach acids become diluted due to the volume of food they

will eat, many toxins, etc can pass into their flesh. Trichonsis is

the parasite most commonly associated with pork. The symptoms are

very non-specific and many people have it without out even knowing

it. The symptoms are things such as headaches, muscle aches and

pain, itchy skin, swelling in extremities, and fever. I personally

don't think it is wise to eat any pork at all, especially raw pork.

There are plenty of other healthy meats available that don't have the

risks that pork does.

Also...curing and smoking are not effective in killing parasites,

although cooking to a proper temperature does.

Hope that helps.
