Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your

religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of

your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they

have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and

analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is

conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and

live up to it. " ~Buddha

That is just awesome advice. How different that is from the way most

people are, believing anything and everything they hear, especially

what comes from the media and their fear-mongering.

As I review how it is that I first came to be a follower of Jesus, I

can see that I applied those very words without knowing it.

But, it does not say anything about not obeying authority figures.

Anyone going to see The Passion of Christ movie?

Well, I think it does:

" Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and

elders. "

In fact, one translation of this same passage says, " Do not believe anything

because your teachers have said it, even if I have said it.... "
