Guest guest
You probably know that Vermont is at the center of the GMO debate. On Friday, 27 Feb., the Vermont Senate is going to decide on the " Time Out " bill that will place a 2-year moratorium on planting genetically engineered crops in Vermont, so that the state's policies can catch up with this fast-moving technology. Town meetings all over Vermont have urged Senators to support strong legislation to protect Vermont farmers in the form of S. 164, otherwise known as the Farmer Protection Act. The grassroots support for measures on genetically engineered crops has focused on the call for a Time Out on GMOs, and the wide base of advocates for a GE Free Vermont called on lawmakers last Thursday night to support the rights of farmers and hold the commercial manufacturers of genetically engineered products strictly liable for economic, ecological, and food security damage. There are only about 16 farms in all of Vermont that are heavy users of GMO seeds. Once again, here we are, the majority, being forced to do the will of the few. When will it stop? Just so you know, Tuscany, that fabulous center of all things culinary, has voted to be totally GE free. They don't want their food sources to become contaminated, want their food to retain nutrients, and want to keep the future of food safe. Politics being what they are these days it's pretty hard to feel like you can make a difference. Well, that's about to change! If you've been waiting for the One Thing you could do to really make a difference, here is. Please, call your Senators today, Monday, Tuesday or no later than Wednesday and tell them you want them to support a time out on GMOs in Vermont. The bill number is S. 162. Then call 3 friends and ask them to do the same. Here's a link with the contact info for Senators by county: http://www.leg.state.vt.us/legdir/districts.cfm?Body=S Thanks.
