Guest guest
It's amazing and really ought to be out there in the schools who have such low expectations of our children. I actually think as well as being amazing it is also very sad. Vicky
Guest guest
Gosh, it would be great for her to go to special schools and talk to the teachers. Would they listen? i would love for her to talk to my son's ex speech therapist, the one who said my son was probably never going to be able to do any school work. > > > > I hope this link will work, this is so wonderful and hopeful, and we > all > > know our kids are bright ! > > > > http://abcnews.go.com/Health/Story?id=4320297 & page=2 > > > > Best wishes , > > Sharon. > > >
Guest guest
We have a young British lady on this list who expresses herself very well via computer. It's Barrett's daughter. She has a webpage where she posts her thoughts and ideas. I was quite thrilled reading it as she sounded very mature and compassionate. bbrowne123 schrieb: > > Gosh, it would be great for her to go to special schools and talk to > the teachers. Guest guest
-We are having an awful time with Katy's new school.I have written another post ,but it has not come through. In Primary school after disagreements with the school in the early years katy had a fantastic TA .When she left Primary school although with very limited langauge skills she had made amazing progress. She is a bright girl. However, her new school seem to think poor communication = low IQ. An example is on leaving Primary school she was almost at a level 3 with language support for her subjects.Yesterday she had an hour lesson writing out the numbers 11- 20 !! It makes my blood boil ! We have a meeting Nov 7th,but i don't feel we will get anywhere. Looking at options and info for home schooling now. Apologies if my earlier post comes through . Guest guest
is it possible for there to be communication between the old school and the new? and can you take them examples of work she has completed or video of her working at a higher level? > > > > It's amazing and really ought to be out there in the schools who > have such > > low expectations of our children. > > I actually think as well as being amazing it is also very sad. > > Vicky > > >
Guest guest
They may not be equipped to work above level 2. Perhaps find out if they have other children working above level 2. If the majority of their pupils come from primary special schools they may have very low expectations and be pretty rigid in adhering to them Sally stephaniesirr wrote: > > is it possible for there to be communication between the old school > and the new? and can you take them examples of work she has > completed or video of her working at a higher level? > > > > > > > > It's amazing and really ought to be out there in the schools who > > have such > > > low expectations of our children. > > > I actually think as well as being amazing it is also very sad. > > > Vicky > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------ > > > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG - http://www.avg.com > Version: 8.0.175 / Virus Database: 270.8.2/1742 - Release Date: 23/10/2008 15:29 > >
Guest guest
-Steph, I find it hard to believe they are treating her so.There was a long transition. The teacher who runs the Autism Resource center in the school came several times to see her working, also the key worker. They talked with her TA and teachers ,took samples of her work, even worked with her.I provided them with Katy's work from her last year in Primary for them to look over. Something is very wrong.Since her starting i have been asking to see her work, and only last week this has been provided. She has a diary where they write things like online maths, etc.maths seems to be the biggest problem.I think they do not have experience to differentiate the work and support her language with visuals etc I don't know for sure.So we have a meeting to attend to try and sort it.We have been working with Katy after school at the level she was at in primary and she isn't having too many problems .Only thing is she is tired by this time. I'm so worried as we looked around several schools in the area and I felt this was a place that she would fit into and grow. Guest guest
-Sally, It's a mainstream school with an Autism support unit attached. I think they have a problem because of her poor language and are having trouble facilitating her learning plus low expectations. Thanks, Sharon. -- In Autism-Biomedical-Europe , Eva family wrote: > > They may not be equipped to work above level 2. Perhaps find out if they > have other children working > above level 2. Guest guest
I'm sure you are right. Teachers are very verbal people. There was some research from Canada a few years ago showing that autistic people who were believed to be MR showed as highly intelligent on non-verbal reasoning tests. Then some stuff about " who would ever have thought it " from the staff. So.........I'm sure you are right. I had this problem and found it impossible to overcome in an acceptable time frame. If they are attached to a main stream school they should have resources in the main school which they can draw on. They possibly need primary resources rather than remedial secondary school resources. That might be part of their problem ie they need maths for little children illustrated with lots of pix rather than lots of chat. However they can offer resources like choirs, music tuition, swimming lessons, group sport (if they do them and if your daughter likes them) which you will find very difficult to replicate at home.
