Guest guest
My baby is 10.5 months and has been eating sporadically the last few weeks. When a neighbor was watching her she ate a big pizza crust and that constipated her something awful. Otherwise i don't see any problems. she mostly eats bits of meat and munches on raw carrots and apples. she likes peas but they go through undigested. she doesn't seem interested in dairy. she's my second so i'm not nearly as particular, esp. since she samples whatever my three year old drops on the floor (this child doesn't need primal defense!). Katja, you are feeding your baby a whole foods diet. I would relax. extra fluids are essential when they begin eating. Less variety may help you see what's constipating her. when you feel guilty think of all the 11-month-olds eating french fries at mcdonalds, those gerber juices and cookies, pop tarts, candy, etc. I have also read in various places that goat's milk, though easier to digest, is inferior nutritionally for babies. The folates? folic acid? i don't remember. I would check it out. I suggest just giving the baby a little milk to see if s/he's allergic or sensitive. I personally think a little experimentation with whole foods is fine, but that's my opinion. They're tougher than they look. elaine ps; i began feeding my first out of ignorance when she was almost 6 months old. she's 3.5 now and shows no sign of food sensitivities (except to Coke which dh sometimes gives her). early feeding doesn't necessarily cause problems. Guest guest
thanks, elaine! i don't have a source for goat's milk (um, that's for lack of trying) cause, well, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! cowmilk! i just can't bear to think what we'd do if she was lactose intolerant! i'm going to take your " their tougher than they look " and heidi's " stop guilting " and decide that just cause she goes through a bit of constipation doesn't mean she'll be constipated for life. and i'm going to try to get more fluids in her and get some prunes. and get the real kefir. this is starting to look like a sane, rational plan! Guest guest
since we're on the topic i thought i'd share what happened today with my 10.5 month old. I got a shipment of raw butter in today after a long dry spell. Out of curiosity i gave her a little bit. She gobbled up it up! In the end she ate quite a bit of raw butter. I was really shocked at how much she ate. I'm crossing my fingers hoping she doesn't get constipated. she drank a bunch of water after her butter feast so hopefully not. She definitely goes for fatty, meaty foods: coconut oil, meatloaf and now butter. I think i will see if she goes for cod liver oil. Guest guest
I would think oil would have the opposite effect, as it um, lubricates. Gaby likes to eat olive oil...drenched on eggs, kale, yucca/malanga, dried crackers(flax/pumpkin), you name it. I would think milk only constipates when someone is not digesting the protein, but then again, I'm lactose intolerant so constipation was never a problem growing up as I used to drink as much as a gallon of milk/day. I guess I'm not a very good judge. Guest guest
My 2 year old loves raw butter (cultured). I have to keep it out of site or she will eat the whole dish. SHe also loves CLO. She will only eat eggs raw. She would prefer her meat raw too. SHe is more NT than me. SHe loves NT ketchup.
