Guest guest
I don't know whether this will be of interest to any of you, but if you strain yoghurt either for the purpose of gathering whey for fermenting other things or just to make a thicker yoghurt or to go all the way to yoghurt cheese, the Donvier yoghurt cheese maker is very handy. I have a Yogourmet yoghurt maker, and it came with a cloth bag for dripping yoghurt. NOT CONVENIENT! You have to dump the yoghurt into the bag, hang the bag from something, and the bag can swing and the drips aren't always predictable, so you can wind up with a mess -- and then after you get the dripped yoghurt out of the bag, you have a messy bag to deal with. I wound up tossing the bag after leaving it unwashed a little too long once and finding myself with a blackened, crusted mess, and since then I've fermented a lot less. The Donvier isn't anything you couldn't improvise on your own -- it's basically just a fine-mesh strainer and a plastic container -- and I'm not exactly enchanted by the use of plastic, but the parts fit together nicely, it's compact, it has a lid, and it's pretty cheap ($15 list), so it gets my seal of approval. -
