My Mom says her grandma had a kraut barrel on the porch, and they just reached their hands in and took handfuls for snacks ... typically the kraut barrel didn't have a sealed top, just a loose cover and a plate/weight to hold the kraut down. Once it is nice and sour it's pretty indestructable, though they do recommend not opening it too often (playing it safe, I'd guess).
