Believe it or not, that is the stance of some of the gluten researchers. That they don't want wholesale testing of children (as they do in Italy, it is said) because it would be such a horrific thing to suggest a child would have to do without wheat. Granted a lot of these kids are at risk of leukemia, T1 diabetes, obesity, and other fatal diseases if they are NOT tested, that is insane! Those of us who eat just fine without gluten (including pizza and brownies, on occasion) think this is just crazy. But it says something about the place of wheat in our society, that the medical community thinks that risking death is preferable to denying it. What's really funny is that some of those same people are quite willing to recommend an Atkins diet, which is far more restrictive (I'm not dissing Atkins, just that it IS harder to go on Atkins than it is to just not eat wheat). >i couldn't figure out how to explain to him that his child was actually not >entitled to wheat to begin with. You can't. What does help is serving GF brownies at school events ... and cookies ... once people see it really isn't that big a deal they are a lot more open. >farm good. >city...overwhelming. OK, now here is a good idea for a NEW TOPIC ... Are any of you growing your own vegies? I have some grow lights now starting my own little shoots ... my goal is to grow my own lettuce this year and maybe some potatoes. We already harvest all our own berries. I'm also thinking of getting some broilers and stocking my own pastuered chickens. Any ideas? I don't want to feed them chicken food, I'm thinking kefired oats ... -- Heidi Jean

(um, that kinda sounds snotty, doesn't it?) what i *really* want to try is peach trees...cause ya know. it's not *that* cold in vermont.... >I'm also thinking of getting some broilers and stocking my >own pastuered chickens. There are a bunch of where the use of EM is discussed, and apparently chickens do really well on EM fermented grain. Guest guest
Katja, We have a Reliance peach tree we put in and have got peaches from in the last few years. Recommend it for flavor and hardiness, 25 below. We'll see how she did this spring through the 40 below. > what i *really* want to try is peach trees...cause ya know. it's not *that* > cold in vermont.... OK, farm girl ... since you are bored anyway ;--) ... how do you start your plants? Do you just plant the seeds outside and let them sprout, or do you start them indoors first? We have this really short growing season, so I'm trying (for the first time) to start them inside under a grow light. Also, if you have free range birds, how do you keep them from eating your outside plants? And how do you keep the predators from them? We had a hawk scaring the daylights out of ours (first time) and it took an hour to coax them back home for the night, they were hiding in the woods. It's ok to sound snotty as long as you help the rest of us <weg>. > >I'm also thinking of getting some broilers and stocking my >>own pastuered chickens. Any ideas? We don't have crickets ... I do have worms. Can a chicken grow on just flax meal? Or flax and oats and worms and kefir? My layers get leftovers and do fine on that, but I won't have enough leftovers for broilers. >-- Heidi Jean

And how do you keep the predators from them? >We had a hawk scaring the daylights out of ours (first time) and it took >an hour to coax them back home for the night, they were hiding >in the woods. well, i have free range birds, but i *don't* have a free range garden. as for predators, i can't figure that out yet. we have hawks like crazy, but so far they haven't molested the birds. we have lots of predators, actually, and i just don't understand why we haven't lost any yet. on the other hand, there's plenty of natural fodder for the predators - we're on 150 acres and our neighbors are on 200 acres and their neighbors are...for a good 10-15 mile stretch. i think that must help. we do put the birds in at night... >It's ok to sound snotty as long as you help the rest of us <weg>. hee! gladly!! >We don't have crickets ...
