Mike, In a recent _Neuron_ there was an article that found that the removal of certain gustatory and olfactory genes in C. Elegans can regulate lifespan. Unfortunately, the article didn't describe the *functional* trends, vis-a-vis the odorants and tastes that they were responsible for sensing. But I suspect that the sweet taste is a primary one. (It's only *some* gustatory and olfactory neurons that play a role). So it may be that overusing sweeteners could be harmful, not only useless. I suspect this is only true with chronic use-- if you put your body in and out of life-lengthening mode cyclically, you should be able to lengthen your life as effectively as, say, calorie-restriction, like the fasting-feasting mice do. By the way, we've talked about the effect of taste on insulin before, but did folks know that SMELLING food raises your insulin levels?
