Mike,

In a recent _Neuron_ there was an article that found that the removal of

certain gustatory and olfactory genes in C. Elegans can regulate lifespan.

Unfortunately, the article didn't describe the *functional* trends, vis-a-vis

the

odorants and tastes that they were responsible for sensing. But I suspect that

the sweet taste is a primary one. (It's only *some* gustatory and olfactory

neurons that play a role).

So it may be that overusing sweeteners could be harmful, not only useless. I

suspect this is only true with chronic use-- if you put your body in and out

of life-lengthening mode cyclically, you should be able to lengthen your life

as effectively as, say, calorie-restriction, like the fasting-feasting mice

do.

By the way, we've talked about the effect of taste on insulin before, but did

folks know that SMELLING food raises your insulin levels?

Signalling of the olfactory neurons.
