" @@@@@@@ LOL! Thanks Lynn; nothing like the ol' Onion! Ya know, I was reading that and the thought of the very existence of tofu shaped like an animal just totally slammed my consciousness, like " whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat????? " . Of course I knew those things exist, just like I always knew wooly mammoths existed, but sometimes when you stop to think about things for a second it's like " whoa, dude, hold on, what's going on? " ... If ya know what I'm saying... That's kind of psychologically perverse, to reject eating animals and then do so symbolically. Like, how about eating tofu in the shape of a... soybean? or a soy plant? Or just leave stuff you " shape " for your kid's arts & crafts projects... Any of these make more sense to me... [hmm, what about tofu in the shape of a casket?] It makes me realize how detached I am at this point from the whole wacko subculture of anti-carnivory... and I certainly don't buy *anything* at " health food stores " either... Those days are, like, totally bye bye... Mike SE Pennsylvania

Those days are, like, totally bye bye... I think of " healthfood stores " as pill stores with a handful of non-perishable food items. And, then there are natural food markets, which carry the above items in addition to fresh real food. The ones I go to sell meat. Everybody's Whole Foods in town sells fish and organic poultry, and the New Pioneer CoOp in Iowa City sells everything from fish to pork. I never did understand the whole " let's make fake meat " idea. I figure, it stems from a sense of deprivation in many, and especially ethical vegetarians. The deprive themselves of food they want to eat and feel deprived as a result. But wait ... is it ... could it be ... did the Glutenator have her sorghum stick in all of this? Those soy turkeys are made with vital wheat gluten (which should be named detrimental wheat gluten) and all sorts of other nasty junk? Did Helga sabotage an entire industry to save the vegans from themselves?

As far as ethical conundrums go, I was told the other night about a vegetarian who raises grass-fed beef near here ... he slaughters one per year to pay the taxes on his land.
