I usually just do it before my work out. Sometimes I don't do it if I don't have the extra time. I usually do the bridge for a minute or minute and a half, the splits for one minute, and some other exercises for 1 minute or a half minute each. I'm trying to get in the habit of doing the splits twice, a second time for a minute at the end of my stretching routine (overall 5-7 minutes), because I think I'll make faster progress. I'd like to be able to do the full splits, but that last foot or half foot or whatever it is goes pretty slowly! Chris

Maybe I can get someone else to take the picture ;-) But I can't do full splits yet. I come about half a foot or a foot off the ground, which I'd estimate to be about 85-90% of the way (I never really measured). I can only do front legged splits, > both legs. On a good day I can go back about perpendicular or so, but I can't imagine touching my head to my feet. Or are you on your stomach with this one? You will find that you are more stretchy after warming your > muscles good, as you know. I usually do 5 minutes of cardio for a little warmup. I always do splits, bridge, and that thing on your stomach where you push your back up before squats, but I find that adding the weight on increases my flexibility even more. For example, I can go down considerably farther with a couple hundred pounds than with the bar. Chris

Uh, and since this is an observable feat, we want photographic evidence ;] I can only do front legged splits, both legs. Do you ever do sun salutations? What about arm flexibility? Reach one arm up, one down and clasp hands. It took me 2 years to master that simple one, as my shoulders were tight for years. I am trying to do king cobra where the feet touch the head from behind. I dream about that pose, lol. You will find that you are more stretchy after warming your muscles good, as you know. Guest guest
> I don't know what they are. Here ya go, watch this: http://www.yogacircle.com/asanas.html Click on the sun salutations. But before that, see that pose on one leg, the one in the center? It's called natarajasana. Actually, there are many asanas (positions) that would get my foot on the back of me head, and would be happy with any one of them. BTW, I have studied/taught this flavor of yoga, Iyengar yoga. >Behind your back???? No! I just tried it and I can't even get close!!! Duh. Yeah, behind your back. Sorry. It would be helpful if I could be a bit more explicit. Get a tie or a belt and inch your hands closer together over time. I am trying to do > king cobra where the feet touch the head from behind. I dream about that > pose, lol. Here it is: http://www.sivananda.org/teachings/asana/cobra.html Now, I don't by that " observations are false " claim you are making. Besides, by having a photographic example of your flexibility as a goal, you'll work harder to achieve it. Have a lovely day. Deanna

Guest guest
and you teach iyengar! that's what i do too! whee!-katja Groovy Katja! I don't teach now... well, I don't get paid for teaching :-) I used to until I moved here. Iyengar is so anatomically correct, so it was a natural choice coming from a fitness background. But yikes! We are looking at a high risk of severe weather today! I think I need some relaxing asanas and pranayama today! Deanna

Huh? What " observations are false " claim? Are you referring to my facecious extrapolation of Marla's " scientific reasoning " in the other thread?
