I was going to ask a question on this, ie is there any exercise or gadget anyone has found particularly helpful in dealing with the loose jaw/mouth thing? I know you can do blowing bubbles, I wonder for how long per day you would need to do it to make a real difference. Charlotte
Guest guest
Sorry Sara I didn't see your post and thanks for your ideas. I did read the Buteyko book a while back and thought it was really interesting. I don't have asthma or daytime sinus problems BUT every morning when I wake up my nose is bunged up. The Boutenko book says this is because I overbreathe in the night (and I certainly do) and overbreathing causes the nose to congest. It explains how to hold your breath a bit to release your nose - sorry I've not got it here and not sure I do it right BUT I can now unblock my nose in the mornings quite easily. I've managed to stop mouth breathing in the day - Tim points out whenever I lapse. They say the Boutenko breathing is good for asthma - but again I'm not expert. The Buteyko book convinced me to try to change my breathing and I have been taping my mouth up on and off for months. Tim thinks it's a great idea :-)!!!!! Actually it is just awful when he makes me laugh ... But I got mouth sores and then a blister on LDM which made it difficult - I also gave Eddie a fright one night when I couldn't unstick fast enough. We've been trying to think of alternatives - we even wondered about a kind of Marley contraption .... but we're also trying to improve lymph drainage ... (What a sad case I am :-)!) Fingers-crossed the lip-trainer will help but I'm keen for new ideas and we may be able to work something better out with taping up. Found a link on - unblocking http://www.buteykocourses.com/blockednose.htm Maybe it can be bought in the UK?? http://www.liptrainer.com/shop/ (It looks like one supplier is a Buteyko specialist). Best wishes, Sandyx

Guest guest
Wow - that is interesting Sandy, thanks very much for that. If I ever get round to treating myself I will definitely give your gadget a go (doesn't the tape hurt?) Guest guest
I was at a conference recently where they discussed Talk Tools which are products to help with a variety of mouth difficulties. http://www.talktools.net/s.nl/sc.23/.f You can buy in the UK here http://www.smile-education.net/talk/categories.php?cat=27 & PHPSESSID=3fb17611970734fe7df68fa65228d5ca To be honest I was a little mind-boggled by the number of products and wasn't sure what would be best for my son so I emailed them a couple of weeks ago for advice but no one has got back to me. You might have a better idea of what you're looking for. My four year old son drooled until a few months ago and the thing that helped most was a specialist speech therapist who does lip exercises with him which we also do at home - just getting him to stick it out, to the sides, up and down, bubbles, horns, licking off a stick or spoon. He had no control of his tongue and this really helped, also has helped him make a lot more sounds now that he has some tongue control (he has severe apraxia). hope that helps To: Autism-Biomedical-Europe From: cylkev@...Date: Sat, 22 Nov 2008 09:47:18 +0000Subject: Re: LipTrainer - weak lip/mouth muscles > ds with lip closure. Guest guest
Hi Sara, I can't say I got on well with the tape. I found a surgical tape that isn't overly sticky if you know what I mean. But you still have to take your time taking it off (oogey - but you wet it with saliva and it lifts off - but if you rush its another story). You can put tissue over your lips - but this didn't work perfectly for me either. Best wishes, Sandy
Guest guest
Wow - I never knew there were so many tools like this. It's fascinating. Would be good to know what they say if they get back to you. Best wishes, Sandy
