Guest guest
> everything right! one thing we've done lately is invest soundly in AFM > SafeCoat, which you can find at www.healthyhome.com - it's non- toxic paint Warning -----gonna be long as this is one of my most favorite interests!! BTW- healthhome.com's staff is wonderful, knowledgeable and willingly returns stuff!! Safecoat makes wonderful products. We've used lots of their products in our home (we're remodeling). Our house is cedar outside and after it was powerwashed I ordered an AFM (company that produces Safecoat) sealant. Houses have negative pressure inside so whatever goes outside makes it's way inside quickly. This stuff was great ....made from flax, soy oil (hey perfect use!) and other stuff. Our painter LOVED it because it didn't make him sick. THere was NO smell at all when he was done. I've also used their glues for our tile work and sealants to keep other stuff from outgassing. I did use regular low VOC paint in our home as no one near Atlanta sells Safecoat and healthyhome could not adjust it to the colors I wanted. However even low VOC still has an odor and outgasses. I did a ton of research on this and really believe Safecoat (and one other company -name?) are truly the only totally non-toxic regular type paints.(You can also use milk based paints but it would take a ton for walls and won't hold up) If I had a child I would use Safecoat in their room for sure as well as seal other stuff that outgasses (cheap closet doors, built-ins, molding etc) and get rid of anything that could gives off formaldehyde (cheap furniture like from Office Depot esp!) and regular carpet. I would also keep the air filtered. My newphew is constantly sick and now has asthma...living in Atlanta air of course! If my brother would take half the stuff out of their house and put him on a really wholesome diet I believe he'd be fine. But they have don't put any stock in this. It's a shame ...as my mom tells me, I have to keep my mouth shut. I've read way too much on kids and toxic home enviroments to know regular carpets need to go, filter air, get rid of outgassing paints, lower humidity to lower molds, throw out ALL the chemical cleaning crap, lower exposure to electomagnetics ...... It just makes commons sense but not to my brother and sister-in-law. We also keep HEPA filters going on timers that come on at night and when we're away...Atlanta has ROTTEN air but so does most of the country to a lesser degree . My husband does air pollution work so we " know too much " . I would say if you're living anywhere near a city this is critical as well as keeping one going in your car. I commute daily for 30 minutes on expressways and can tell the difference! The one in my car is called a Roomaide hepa filter and can be made to hook to the cigarette lighter. The whole setup cost about $100.00. My dh then wraps an extra charcoal filter around the outside to increase particle filtering. One very good source of cheap furniture is Ikea! We ordered all our library and office furniture from them and will be getting kitchen cabinets eventually. Europe has a much stricter standard on formaldhyde emmissions so furniture from Europe (or Canada) has less in it. Still has some though! I researched Ikea and they are really trying to lower their's as much as possible. There's no store in Atlanta so I had to get it all from a catalog sight unseen. I've been really pleased. It's not high end of course but isn't junky either. Course you have to put it ALL together....so get lots of homemade beer brewing and ready! I've been studying this stuff for about 2-3 years as hopefully when I retire...great thing about getting older!!!!...I can do something with nontoxic living enviroments. I'm presently working on certification from the Institute of Bau-Biology. It's a system from Gernany of considering the factors making up your living enviroment as vital to your health and well being as everything else. Okay I'll stop here!
