Where did that come from? I've been following this thread pretty closely, but this looks like a total non-sequitur to me.

I won't bother trying to justify that comment, but I will say that I believe the self-righteousness proceeds from the ideology of the diet itself, which has self-righteousness, and not compassion, as a basis. I was vegetarian and also vegan for a period, and this is my opinion based on experience, including my retrospective judgment of my own views. Guest guest
I've had a few vegetarians in our company, and since we share lunch, it gets personal! We've had other folks with dietary restrictions, but the vegies tend to be really judgemental, which might be the problem. I mean, when you eat a nice rare steak in front of one, they stare like you were a child molester or mass murderer. Heidi, I hope I'm not repeating what others have said on this threat, I didn't read it all. But I wanted to toss in a comment. Who are they to pass judgment on you? I know what you mean about how they look at you, but if you feel guilty when they look at you, that's something you can control. Noone can make YOU feel guilty but you just remind yourself that their principle of not killing animals is a false one and don't let a drop of guilt enter your mind. Just smile back at them. And look at them like, how could they eat that nasty tofu burger when millions of bunny rabbits (insert any other small animal that lives in a field) died for it and they don't even acknowledge it. Or at least, that might make you feel a bit better.

Thanks! Actually my problem isn't " guilt " so much as that as hostess I feel it is my job to make everyone comfortable and happy (as far as that is possible, anyway, which of course it is not, you can't please all the people all the time). A vegetarian will not be happy while there are rare steaks sitting on the table, and the very smell of that roasting meat will make them nauseated. Now if they were really polite they would not make their feelings QUITE so obvious! Actually I eat my bloody-rare steaks more or less in private usually, even though there aren't any vegans around now, because they make my DH uncomfortable. And I tend to avoid eating my whole dried fish (that look just like the ones that jump out of the fish tank and you find them a month later) in public. However, people are getting more used to this stuff. I just don't relish confrontations. Plus, I ask THEM not to bring any wheat into my presence (or into the house, in fact) so who am I to talk about picky people? -- Heidi Jean
